I don't know what to say to help with the cost stuff, but please be aware that if you drop your insurance your mortgage holder will place forced insurance on you (just like if you dropped your auto insurance) and it is WAY more expensive than normal home owners insurance. I don't know where you live but I have great coverage with Michigan Millers (I only pay $68/month for full replacement coverage). |

If you carry a mortgage on your home, you have to carry insurance on that note with the lien holder (whoever you send your payments to as the loss payee). If you drop your insurance, the lien holder can force you to pay insurance that they will provide and you run a risk of having to pay even higher premiums. My advice would be to shop around and get some rate quotes and compare apples to apples and choose an insurance that will cover your home adequately and save you money. Another thing you can do is up the amount of deductable on your existing insurance. |

Don't drop your insurance.
Try increasing your deductible. |

If you can't afford your insurance chances are you couldn't afford to replace your house and everything in it if you had a loss, so DONT cancel your insurance.
You need to search for a better insurance company that fits your needs. Try doing an internet search for homeowner's insurance in your state and you can usually get quotes online. Try www.statefarm.com
www.progressive.com
www.allstate.com
You can NOT afford to go without insurance, you just need to look around and find something more affordable for you.
Good Luck! |

shop around with other insurance co. You should get a discount if you go with the people you have car insurance with. But just don't drop your homeowners insurance. I have a 1300 sq foot home and our insurance is just over $300 a year and we pay that right in with our mortgage, so I don't have to stress it! It may seem like it doesn't cover much but if you stuff was damaged in a fire it would mean the difference between going bankrupt trying to refurnish and fill another home and being out on the streets because you can't replace what you had! |

Be grateful you're not in FL. How do I know? Because their homeowners rates have TRIPLED over the past couple years, and it's not going to get any better any time soon.
Call your agent, and see what you can do about pricing. Have them quote with a different company. Make sure your house is maintained - if all your major systems have been updated within the past 15 years, there's a hefty credit.
Review your deductible - you can save a TON of money by moving from a $100 deductible to a $1,000 deductible. If it doesn't cover much, review the coverage limits.
If your house is insured for less than $100,000, well, that's where most claims are - you can usually get a price break if you insure the house for $110,000 or more - to the point where it's cheaper to insure the house for $125,000, than it is to insure it for $80,000. In any case, have your agent recalculate replacement cost of your house.
Lastly, consider getting your house and car insurance with the same company - they give hefty discounts for that, too. |
