fallenstar879 | How can I afford health insurance if my employer does not provide it? |
Here's the problem.... I'm almost 21 and work a temporary full-time job with no benefits. I cannot be covered by my parents insurance after the end of the year because I'm not in school full-time. I have several conditions (mostly mental and some physical) which prevent me from taking courses full-time. I got a quote for health insurance (the same plan as I have now). They said it would be $333 some dollars a month. I don't even make that much in a month!!!! I NEED my health insurance for montly doctor's visits and medications. What should I do? |

You get a second job. Since you've got preexisting conditions, it's not likely that you'll find a private insurance company willing to write you coverage. I'd guess that the $333 is only an INDICATION, not a firm, binding quote.
Time to start looking for a permanent full time position, with benefits. |

Check with your state government. All states offer a low cost alternative to low income residents. Also, check with your parents' health care company to verify they can't cover you. A number of states and insurers are now covering part-time students up to ages 24 and 25. |

You can keep searching around.
You can also get gov assistance if you go to the DR that often.
Good luck to you. |

Most states offer plans for situations like yours. I would try to find your state's website (usually www."state".gov) and try to find the health plans they offer. |

Go to school part time and use the University health clinic. See if the school offers any discount rate health plans. Check with your local agencies and see if they have any thing to offer. |

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable. |

Can your parents help? Otherwise, it looks like maybe you need to find a job with better benefits. |
