It depends on the company, but one of the best tools I've found on the internet is a search tool provided by the Department of Insurance in Texas. You can find it at: https://wwwapps.tdi.state.tx.us/pcci/pcci_search.jsp . You just enter the company name, and you'll get quite a full record of the company, including whether it is out of business and if someone else purchased the company or merged, etc.
You can also try D&B (the former Dun and Bradstreet). If you go to their website - http://www.dnb.com/us/ - you'll find on the homepage on the right hand side of the screen that they provide a tool that will allow you to look up a company name. If they still exist, you'll be able to get contact info.
If you can't find the insurer through either of these means, try contacting the Department of Insurance in the state where you live. They may be helpful. They may also have a search tool so that you can look up the company yourself. You can find your department of insurance at: http://www.naic.org/state_web_map.htm . Just click on your state and you'll go straight to the website for the corresponding department of insurance. |

There are a number of ways of finding a company contact. You can try a Yahoo/Google search. You can go to your state insurance department (in Pennsylvania you can go to the insurance department web site and look up the company, if it is licensed in Pennsylvania it will show up with contact information). You can also go to AM Best (ambest.com) to look up the company information (it will show their main address and telephone numbers).
If the company has been purchased or has merged it may be more difficult. If the company was purchased and is still operating as a company you should be able to find it. If the company was purchased and now that specific company is part of another and they no longer use that company name it may be more difficult.
You can also go to your state insurance department to see if the company has just gone out of business. If this is the case you may not have any coverage. There is usually a limit period of time to place claims before the assets of the company are liquidated. In Pennsylvania there is a list of companies that are in liquidation and that have been liquidated. There will be contact information there. |
