Checkin' Things Out | How can I get car insurance on a car that my ex husband let my daughter borrow? The car is still in his name.? |
My ex husband let my daughter borrow one of his cars. He lives in a different state. I had the car registered here in the state we live in, but now the insurance has expired and I can't seem to get insurance for the car now since the car is not in my name.
I cannot get ahold of him at all.....phone is temporarity disconnected, etc., and I think he has not even been paying the payments on the car, since he has not been working for many months now due to the housing crisis in this country....especially the western part. I'm actually wondering why the re-po man hasn't come and collected the car yet.
I will not let my daughter drive the car until it has insurance. It just sits in the driveway. She really needs a car to get to work now and it seems such a waste to have a perfectly good car just sitting there.
Anyone know how I can get some insurance on this car? Or maybe should I call the bank that is financing this car and see if he is even making the payments? Would the bank let me buy the car at a huge discount if he has not been making payments?
Any answers/advice for me will greatly help. Thank you so much! |

Nope, you can't. Only the owner of the car can do that.
The repo man probably hasn't found your car. Don't worry, they will, and your daughter could get pulled over and the car impounded. Or worse, stranded somewhere, when she comes out for the car and finds it gone.
The fact is, the car isn't yours, or hers. Just like you can't insure MY car, you can't insure HIS car. Which means, you can't get plates on it, as the name on the registration has to match the name on the insurance.
The bank can't let you buy the car, without reposessing it first. They won't discuss his account with you, either, due to privacy laws.
Sorry, I'm not much help. Best thing is to keep trying to contact him, and see if he and the bank together would let you "buy" the car out and transfer the loan and car ownership to YOUR name. |

You can't; without ownership, you have no insurable interest in the car. But you can certainly talk to the bank to see what the current state of affairs is, and there is a slight chance that you can sweet-talk them into telling where your ex is, if they know. |

One thing you can do is take out a non-owned vehicle policy for your daughter. This would allow her to drive any car and be insured as long as she does not own it. It would not cover your ex's car but it would cover in case she has an accident and its her fault, then the insurance would cover the other car.

Different states vary WIDELY. Question- How did you do anything i. e. register/insure the vehicle if you did not have title (ownership)?
If you want to play it ALL "by the book", do then contact the bank....gain title...and then register and insure.
Sell at a discount.....???? Bring warm cookies....lol

If it's his car, he should pay for the insurance. But you should buy insurance for your daughter in case of injury... and liability insurance in case she damages someone else's car or injures someone else. Don't insure the ex's car... that's for him to do. |

you can't. he needs to do this. he is the respondsible party. when you get a hold of him, ask him to transfer it to your name, or get insurance. if he won't, might as well return the useless car. good luck |
