Individual health insurance can be very complex. Contact a local, independent insurance agent. He/she will help you with understanding the coverage, the implications of your "pre-existing condition" and the application process. Going to an on-line portal cannot do these things, and it costs you no more to have an agent represent you.
Be up-front and tell them your health conditions and what type of coverage you are looking for. They are there to assist you. |

I had to pick up a private policy for a couple of years, and it's super-confusing. But I was working in HR at the time and I had a few friends in benefits who helped me understand what I was looking at.
You can pick up a private policy for fairly cheap, but you have to be careful because a lot of places will screw you in the small print. For instance, United Healthcare's individual policies have wierd rules (they're also called Golden Rule, and they're one other name).
I had good luck with Fortis Healthcare. They have great prices, a ton of different options for private policies, and their coverage was really good for the money. http://www.assuranthealth.com/
The application process for a private policy is horrible. But be deliberate and answer everything they want to know. If you don't, you might find that they won't pay a claim for you or something.
If you dedicate a Saturday to filling out applications for different insurance providers (Blue Cross/Blue Shield has good policies as well), then you can see where you get the best rates and sign up! |
