You're unlikely to get an individual policy.

If you're able to work, then group health insurance through an employer is your best bet. If you're unable to work, try Medicaid.

Otherwise, your only option is if your state has a high risk pool. But I'll be honest...just because you qualify for the high-risk pool through the state doesn't mean you'll be able to afford it. I worked for a very large health insurer in Ohio, and our policy through the state's high risk pool cost upwards of $15K per year. And even then with $15K in premiums, the coverage wasn't 100%...you still had deductibles and coinsurance.

The high risk pool insurance is really only worth it for someone who has such an expensive medical condition to treat that its still cheaper for them to have that ridiculous policy vs. being stuck with the bills. Unless your medical bills are costing you upwards of $20K or more per year out of pocket anyhow the high risk pool through your state might not be worth it.

fine-me!!
You will either have to find a job that offers coverage or if your self employed you can set yourself up as a business group of 1

We have been successful with a medical discount plan. There are no pre-existing condition limits. You can get good coverage for around $50 a month. Often with the discounts I get with this plan I pay less than I used to for copays with insurance.

Try going to you states risk pool. The rates will be higher but they will cover you.

How long ago did you have the brain injury? I am assuming that the epilepsy is from your injury. Some companies look at an illness after ten years, but with yours, I would not hold my breath. Just keep trying. In the state that I live in, there is a pool, that gives people health insurance if they can not get it any where else, you might call your state board of insurance an see if there is a program in the state that you are living in. Best of luck, because everyone needs insurance.

Can you try & apply for disability benefits through Social Security?

Sure you will.

If your state has a high risk health pool, you can apply there. Or if you're eligible for SSDI, after 29 months you're eligible for Medicare.

The only OTHER option you'll have, is with a group policy through your employer.

Most insurance companies will not write insurance on someone who has preexisting health conditions. You may be able to get insurance through an employer. Often, insurance companies will over look preexisting conditions on larger groups. If you are unable to work and have a spouse who can, they may be able to cover you under their insurance plan. Depending on your income, you may qualify for Medicaid, which is through the Federal Government. You might want to check with your local health and human services office or county health office. They should be able to direct you.

Hm...

AFAIK, there are some possibilities of group insurances in US.
It works like health insurances offered by employers. YOu would have to search for yourself... dunno how it works exactly.

Your problem itself shows how lousy and critical the healthcare in US is. Here in Europe, you wouldn't be asked a darn thing... no matter how ill you are, you are covered(free). In fact, with your condition- you'd get other benefits/cash.

I'm sry to hear about your problems... hope you find your solution.

Unfortunately, this is why you need to get insurance before you get any serious pre-existing conditions. (I'm a diabetic, so I speak from personal experience.)

Please list your state. The options, if there are any, would vary widely from state to state; however, MOST (not all) states do have some kind of high-risk pool where they are required to take you regardless of your health history. Unfortunately, they're also allowed to charge you in accordance to that fact, although some states do offer a sliding scale for these plans based on income.

There are sometimes other options depending on the pre-existing condition. Some companies will write coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, but exclude coverage related to those conditions.

You really need to talk to an agent who has experience in dealing with helping insure those with pre-existing conditions. The fact is, it's very time-consuming to assist those with pre-existing conditions in finding coverage options and baby-sit applications with extensive medical background information required. (For instance, I once spent six and a half months helping a client appeal his original rejection. We did eventually get it resolved in his favor, but it was a tedious and time-consuming process.) A lot of agents aren't willing to do it and many simply have no idea how to go about the process.

Make some phone calls in your area and ask for someone who specializes in health insurance. Tell them your situation and ask them specifically if they know of any local insurers who will offer you either of the two options listed above.

Good luck!

Once your husband starts his business, he could offer health insurance to his employees. And if he's an employee of his own business, he could enroll in health insurance coverage for both of you. Then you would guaranteed to get coverage. Then again, if you've had a lapse of coverage for more than 63 days, then the health insurance carrier could exclude coverage for your pre-existing coverage for up to 12 months, so it might not be very useful to you. Sucks.

You might bump into something but with a higher rate.
You have to keep on calling insurance companies and ask about coverage with a pre-existing condition.
