I am a funeral service student and people that cannot afford funeral's donate their bodies to our school. We embalm and then pay for cremation and send the cremains back to the family in an urn at no cost. Your local funeral director she help you with lower cost arrangements is you don't want cremations. An example would be someone donating a plot and being buried in a cloth covered cardboard. |

Who are you burying? Yourself? Or someone else? If it's yourself, don't worry about it. Someone will make sure you get buried. They don't want to have you around stinking up the place.
If it's someone else, you should speak with the funeral director at the local funeral home and find out what kind of payment plan they have, and the lowest cost burial plan they have. Explain your situation and I'll bet he/she can tell you where to go to obtain help. You're not the first person to find himself/herself in this situation. |

Social security will pay $600 for funeral expenses, according to those commercials on T.V. Some funeral homes have less expensive services for indigent (low-income) people, call 211 (the United Way) to find out if there are any in your area. |

I am terribly sorry for your loss, and I wish you the best, and hope you find the funds you need to pay for this untimely tragedy.
You can go to your local State Dept. of Health and Human Services for help if you have no way to pay for the funeral. They may be able to help, depending on your household income.
If the deceased was a veteran, there are some benefits there as well.
Social Security only pays $250 toward funeral expenses.
This is the kind of thing I have been "preaching" about for 30 years. People need to buy life insurance.

Wow, I thought social security paid $255.
Anyway, there's a very small payout.
You need to talk to your pastor at your church. And you need to talk to social services for your town - they likely do cremations at a super cheap rate. |

Check with the churches in your area. You can make a plea for help and most churches are happy to help if you show a true need. Call the pastor of your local church and explain your desparate situation. |
