How can I get my money from the health insurance company?
Two months ago i went to see a podiatrist who prescribed me some non custom orthopedic sandals and insoles. I wasn't sure if these were covered by my health insurance provider so i called to ask. The lady i spoke to told me it was and i should fill in a form for medical devices. I did and mailed it in. They then lost it, so i faxed in copies they then told me i wasn't covered.

I called today and spoke to a supervisor who told me i wasn't covered for non-orthopedic footwear. He says in the noted the call center representative took of our initial phone conversation i asked about custom footwear which was covered. I was also told that it didn't matter anyway as apparently a "sandal" is not footwear. Apparently though they do record conversations this one was not recorded. how convenient. He refused to help me so i gave up.

But while going through my files i realized that the form the lady had told me to fill out says clearly at the top "not for custom orthopedics". The supervisor also told be it was ridiculous that a health insurance company would ever cover non custom orthopedic footwear. I know when i called that i told her it wasn't custom and i know she told me to fill in the medical devices form which is NOT for custom orthopedic. I am looking for any tips on dealing with health insurance companies, insider things it might be good for me to know. I live in Canada (but welcome tips from people who have worked with US health insurance companies)and have considered making a threat to complain to the Better Business Bureau as that seems to be the only thing i can think of. At this point it's not just the money, but someone is lying to me. I know what i was told, somebody made a mistake and they are trying to cover it up.

So much for Canada's wonderful universal health care system.

If this is private insurance, you can file a complaint with the regulating authority, HOWEVER, since you can't prove that they told you it would be covered, if the policy doesn't cover non prescription sandals, I think you're not going to win this.

Have you collected your all medicine and other expenses bills to get reimbursement for it. its necessary for it. if not then arrange them if possible and submit them with your cashless health insurance card no and follow their guidelines too.

No one is trying to cover up anything. Either (a) someone was not listening carefully and did not hear you say that it was non-custom, or (b) someone made a mistake and said something incorrect, but later forgot what they told you.

It is not your money.

You cannot get the money from the insurance company because it is not your money.

~~I have worked in the health insurance industry for over 14 years and also am a consumer as well, from the USA. No matter what and who tells you anything, our insurance corporations will always leave it to the responsibility of the insured to read their own policy and be held responsible if given wrong information.

However, we can always sue for this in USA in small claims (no attorneys so it costs around $75), if you have the time, date, and name of the rep who gave you incorrect information, it is possible for a judge to grant the coverage to you. It has to be $5,000.00 or less to qualify for small claims. Any higher then you would have to go to Superior Court, and the cost outweighs the risk of judgment. Either option though is just a chance you may win, certainly no guarantee.

So that is basically the sad state of affairs in USA, and I could tell you some real horror stories of what people have been stuck paying for that ends with them filing bankruptcy, losing their homes, etc. It's a mess. In our country it is considered a luxury to have health insurance, not a necessity. President Obama is slowly trying to improve this, but it's a very long road ahead for him due to the corporate power we have to contend with!~~
