daniellecab21 | How can I get out of debt without filing bankrupcy? This is rediculous!? |
My family could never afford health insurance, well I had it through my dad for a while but when I turned 19 (almost 1 yr ago) I got dropped off his plan. I was pregnant at the time and they are not covering any bills during that obviously. Now after I was dropped off I def. could not afford insurance so I had the baby with NO insurance and right after the baby i went into ceptic shock and was in the ICU for almost a week. Lots of bills including pediatric bills now too. its overwhelming and it's over $30,000 dollars. There are so many bills i can keep up with any type of payment plan. My employment didnt offer insurance at the time, and I didntqualify for medicaid cuz im LIVING with someone (roomate) who makes lots of money and they said they HAD to count that on the income part. so i got rejected, so i did try. now I just dont know what to do. it seems wrong that a 19 yr old has to file bankrupcy when its ALL medical bills. Additional Details I mean it was situations of life or death! its rediculous that i almost didnt go cuz i had no insurance |

Danielle,
Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your having such a tough time. Hope you find a way to work things out with our crazy health care system.
There's a good article at eHow on steps to take to begin tackling your debt. Take a look at it:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2326032_avoid-escalating-debt.html
How to Stop Escalating Debt
It includes information on companies that can help you with debt consolidation and reduction.
You can also look here for tips on earning some extra cash online:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2254361_money-internet.html
How to make money on the internet, scam-free
There's also a good article that discusses how to get health insurance for you and your family when you don't have a job that covers you:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2367563_keep-health-insurance-lose-job.html
How to Get Health Insurance
Take a look at it, as it covers all the major possibilities for getting insurance, and gives some great resources you can use.
Lastly, here's an interesting alternative to conventional lending...getting a "social networking" loan from Virgin Money (from the same folks who run Virgin Airlines):

Hope these help. |

Sorry, 'poor me', but landlord is correct. Whose decision was it to have sex without proper birth control at the age of 19, with no husband and no means of insurance ?
You are here wailing now because you made more than one bad decision. Now you expect help to cover your egregious errors ? Time for you to grow up.
You fail to realize that we can also read your previous questions, and it appears that you think you may be AGAIN pregnant. How about some personal responsibility here ? |

That really sux, hope you dont have to file bankruptcy. But if it cannot all be put into one payment that you can afford, I cannot see another solution. |

Not being judgemental but is your roomate - also the babys daddy? If so, Medicaid will count his income and since he helped make that baby - he should help pay for the bills to deliver it.
If the roomate is a traditional roomate - another woman with whom you have no romantic relationship - you split the bills etc - then I'd talk to medicaid again.
However, I suspect that the room mate is a male with whom you are involved - in which case, yes his income will be counted.
Either way, consider pursuing baby daddy to help with the bills. Since you did not make that baby by yourself-- he's also responsible for helping to pay for the delivery. |

I had an unexpected stay in the hospital while I was "between jobs" and had no insurance. The bill was over $9,000. The first thing I did was to contact the hospital and let them know about the financial situation I was in. I filled out "hardship papers" and luckily there was an organization out there that picked up the bill. Don't file for bankrupcy! Many times when applying for credit, lenders may be somewhat forgiving on the hospital bills (I sold cars and dealt with several lenders). There are also many different charitable organizations out there that might be able to help or guide you in the right direction (Catholic Charities is a good one). I know many people don't like receiving charity, but everyone needs help once in a while, just don't abuse the generosity of others.
Don't lose your head about the situation that you are in. Try and stay positive. Everything will work out in the end. It always does . |

You should first call the hospital and tell them your situation. They probably won't really do that much for you though, but they will set up some type of payments. Bankrupcy is designed to help people out of bad situations and you seem to be in a bad situation with money right now. If you do need to claim bankrupcy it won't be that bad, just try to pay what you can. |

I'm sorry that you're in the situation you're in.
Not to be harsh, but before getting pregnant you should have known what could go wrong, and had a plan for how to pay for it. |

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. It is very tough to live without health insurance. However there is an alternative that can help you save on your medical expenses. It is now where near the cost of having health insurance and it provides discounts on everything from medical, dental, vision, prescription, chiropractic and more. You may want to check into it to save you from being in this position ever again. For more information you can visit www.SaveonMedicalandDental.com |

Call the hospital's billing department. Talk it over with them and see if you can get on some sort of payment plan. |

Filing bankruptcy isnt as not as bad as it seems. You can also file a chapter 13 which is not as bad as a chapter 7 cuz you're paying the bills back. You set up payments and have to pay it back in say 5 yrs or what ever your attorney works out for you. You can also consolidate also. Not trying to be rude, but 30,000 is alot of money. I would do the chapter 7 if I were you. Its not like you have to add in everyhting you own or anything. Just do it on medical. Do something though before you get your wages garnished. |

The hospital should be willing to work out a payment plan, maybe 500-600 a month. Have you talked to them? They deal with this all of the time and usually have really good plans.
And please stop with the poor me, you are the one that decided life without insurance would be just fine. You are responsible for this, no one else. |
