Bear E | How can I lower my car insurance if it is high because of bad credit? |
I have been told that my car insurance is high because of a bad credit rating. I am currently enrolled in a DMP to pay down some credit cards and I'm sure this is why it is so bad. Will any insurance company work with me to lower my rate? I currently have GEICO insurance bc it was the lowest I could find. I lease my car and always make my car and insurance payments on time.

Isn't it a joke that insurance companies can base your rate on your credit history!! Like, someone with bad credit just has to be a bad driver! This is an issue that needs to be addressed...just doesn't make sense to me where the relation is...anyway, in the meantime...raise your deductable up to $500 or higher, but stash enough extra $ to cover it if you have the need to file...hang in there...in the meantime, hope you have cut up those cards!
I've had good info about it here:

Not all states use your credit score. In California insurance companies do not use your credit score.
You need to work with the people in your state to change the law that makes using credit scores illegal. If everyone got together it would change. Call your Insurance Commissioner or Department of Insurance in your state. They are the ones that can make things change. But when no one wants to do the work and energy to make things change, they won't. |

I was shocked when I found out they used my credit score for insurance rates. I guess they think a person with good credit scores has less stress and therefore won't have an accident. If you don't pay them, they cancel, so what's the point.
I think it should be illegal.
Oh, I have Geico also. You just have to call around and don't even think of Progressive. |

Improve your credit, lower your coverages.
Travelers will "work" with you, if your poor credit rating is due to a serious medical issue or a divorce. You'll have to bring PROOF of that, though. |

All insurance companies you a different rating system to determine your premiums; as I'm sure you are aware, things such as driving history, vehicle, age, and sometimes credit all factor into your premiums.
The issue with credit is this - while it may be hard to believe, many insurance companies actually make most of their revenue investing the money they receive from you; therefore, if you don't pay your bill on time, or in this case if the insurance company thinks you won't pay your bill on time, they will raise your rates. While you may make timely payments now, they base their decisions on your credit report.
One solution may be (if you can afford it) is to pay all of your insurance (6 months worth) at once. |

You already shopped around and found the best deal - not much more you can do until you straighten out your credit record, which takes time. |

Unfortunatley Insurance Companies have jumped on the Credit Score bus as well. They have conducted studies which show that individuals with a low IBS (Insurance Bureau Score) are more of a high risk then those with a score of 700+.
Until you are able to bring your score up, you can tae a look at your limits and see if it would be beneficial to change them. But befre you do that, see if there are any additional credits that you may qualify for:
Low Mileage discount- if you drive your car a short amt of miles annually
Pleasure Use vs Commute- driving to work or school daily is higher than if you use public transportation (for some companies this is a rate determinant)
If you have children see if they give a Good Student Discount (normally for children under 21/25 who maintain a B average or better
Away At School discount if you have a child in college who is 100 miles or more away from home w/o a vehicle
Defensive Driver Training
Window etching- if you vin is etched in your window
Passive or Active Alarm
Do you have a home or renters policy with this company- some companies offer a package discount |
