How can I settle a medical bill?
Last June 13,2007 right hand got burned. I was rushed to the e.r of kaiser permanente and now I am billed almost a thousand dollars. The doctor didn't do that much. He just put some silver dine and gave me a Tylenol. Please help me. I am only living from paycheck to paycheck. I currently have a kaiser insurance now. I had it after 2 months of the incident. What can I do?

You call the hospital, ask them to reprice for a cash price, and work out a payment plan. And take a second job to increase your cash flow.

You're problem isn't this $1,000 bill. $1,000 bills come up ALL THE TIME. The problem is the living from paycheck to paycheck. You need to live UNDER your means (which means, spend less than you make). Increase your means to keep your current spending level, and get some money saved.

And start listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio.

Your Kaiser insurance that you were enrolled into after 2 months of the incident is not going to pay any medical claims that occured before your enrollment date. You will need to contact Kaiser Permanente's billing department and set up a payment plan. (It may take awhile to get someone on the phone that can help but keep trying.) Let them know what you can afford. Sometimes, hospitals or E.R.'s will write off amounts that you cannot pay. Some E.R.'s have programs for low income individuals. They should have given you information regarding payment and what to do it you're not being able to pay the bill.

go to the facility and talk to billing manager. Some hospitals will work with you and work out payment plans.

You could also check with them and see if you could get some help with your bill from Medicaid.

Send them what you can even if its just $5.00 a week or month. At least you are trying.

Also I have heard that if they return your check or money order then you do not owe them?!?!?!? NOT SURE ABOUT THAT AT ALL. Just heard it.

On your billing statement there is a phone number to call with questions, concerns etc. Call them right away. Most health care providers are more than willing to help work our payment plans when people contact them but they feel you are taking responsibility for your debt. Although you might not be happy with the service provided by the doctor at the ER, you were treated and you do owe the bill.

It would have been best to contact them as soon as you received the bill, not six months later, but better late than never. When you talk with the billing department accept responsible for the bill but explain your inability to pay such a large amount.

Ask if there is a department that helps with financial assistance and may know of a state program that helps low income families with medical bills. Also, ask if they can reduce you amount you owe and setup a monthly installment plan to help you pay off the balance. Explain that you now have insurance so you are better prepared for these type of unexpected emergency in the future. Good luck.
