As one answerer noted above, there is no centralized database of all insurance policies. However, there is a resource you may want to check: the Medical Information Bureau. This is a database of information reported by life insurance companies; the information comes from applications for coverage, medical exams and blood profiles/urinalyses done by life insurers, and medical records reviewed during the underwriting process.
If there was any significant medical history reported on the application, the life insurer MUST report it to the MIB, as long as it's a member company (most are members).

An additional comment regarding some other comments: your husband has insurable interest and, in some states such as mine, he can sign for you on an application for coverage. Although the agent is supposed to at least see the proposed insured, many don't bother -- they just want the commission.
Your in-laws MAY have insurable interest if you took out a loan from them and the policy secures the loan; if your will indicates they will gain custody of any minor children you have after your death; etc. HOWEVER, you would be required to sign the application, indicating your consent. It's not unheard of, though, for an imposter to sign for an insured.
If you honestly believe there's a life insurance policy out there and you think it may tempt someone to injure you, you must tell someone. The police probably won't want to speak with you unless you have hard evidence; but you should tell a close friend and/or family member.

You can't easily if you can't get them to tell you.
There is no one central repository of all life insurance policies and their companies.
The best way to do it is to follow the money.
The premiums on the policy have to be paid for some way.
Look for checks to insurers or credit card statements.
If there's a charge/check to an insurer that you are unfamiliar with, call them and ask if there is a policy out on your life. |

People can't just buy a policy on another person's life without their knowledge. There not only has to be an insurable interest between the parties (in other words, you can't buy a policy on a complete stranger), but you would have had to sign the application, and there likely would have been the need for you to participate in a medical. |
