First, you need to find out whether you have vision coverage on your policy.

Vision services (routine eye exams, glasses, and contacts) are not covered under a health insurance policy. You need to have a vision rider on your policy.

That being said...I can tell you how to find out. (Coincidentally, I used to work for Medical Mutual. :) )

You can look up your benefits online by registering for "My Health Plan" on the Medical Mutual website. (Dependents are allowed to register on the website to access their own information - you'll need your full first name, ID Number, Group Number and Date of Birth.) Registered members on the website can access their own information regarding claims and benefits. Here's the registration section of MMO's website: https://www.medmutual.com/member/registerMember.aspx

Otherwise, you should call Customer Service to find out if you have coverage for vision services on your policy. The Member Services number is on the back of the insurance card. (There is more than one Member Services number, because some employer groups have special phone numbers with Medical Mutual. If you don't have access to your insurance card, call the general number at 800-523-8558.) Customer service phone lines are open from 7 am to 6 pm, Ohio time.

And you *can* call Customer Service directly...it doesn't have to be your mom who makes the call. Medical Mutual will take a phone call from a dependent on a policy, asking about their own claims or benefits. (You do have to provide identifying information, of course...generally stuff like the policy number, your name, and date of birth.)

One thing I will tell you...if you do happen to have vision coverage through MMO, keep in mind that when contacts are covered its generally in place of glasses (frames/lenses). If you have had a recent claim for glasses OR plan to purchase a new pair of glasses in the near future, that's something important to keep in mind. Unless your mom's employer has purchased special coverage above and beyond a standard vision policy, you generally can only get either glasses or contacts within your plan coverage period....not both.

The first thing you need to realize is , you do not have insurance, your
mom does. You also need to realize that if she does not want you to get them ......you don't get them. There must be a reason she does not want you to get contacts. Most insurance plans still require a hefty
co-pay when buying contacts. If by some miracle you managed to get them without her consent I would hope she works your but off to pay for them on your own.

You can either read your policy, or talk to your company or agent.

However, this isn't YOUR policy, it's your mother's policy - so SHE would have to do the asking. You might be COVERED under her policy, but it's still her policy.

Health insurance doesn't cover vision stuff. So your contacts aren't going to be covered. She MIGHT have vision coverage, but it's a seperate plan. How it works, is they pay for the exam, and usually a set amount towards the contacts - like $100. Then you pay for the rest.

Many insurance companies do not cover contact lenses at all. Mine doesn't. They only partially cover glasses. Have you asked your mom if they're covered? If not, why not offer to pay for all costs not covered by insurance?

Show her you're serious by getting a part-time job and saving the money in a savings account.

I hope this helps.
