You call your renter's insurance company, and file a claim.
If you don't have any renter's insurance, you don't get any compensation.
But if you don't run out and BUY some renters insurance now, you'll deserve the headache if it happens a second time and you're uninsured.
Just because something bad happens, it does NOT mean you're entitled to reimbursement/money/compensation from someone. That's what insurance is for - IF You buy it. |

you need to file that under your renters insurance. your company may then try and subrogate back to the owner of the home for reimbursement |

You would have to prove that the the owner of the house was somehow negligent. Otherwise, your renter's insurance may pay for the cleaning. What are the other apartment dwellers doing about the smoke damage? |

Your first avenue would be to file a claim with your Tenant's policy. Don't have a Tenant's policy? Then it gets complicated.
How did the fire start? Can it be proven that the fire started through someone else's negligence? If yes then you will have to sue that party for your damages. If the answer is no then I'm afraid you are out of luck. If the fire was started, and can be proven, by arson you may have access to some sort of "Victim of Crime" fund, however it may not cover your situation. |

Well I don't know the laws in PA but here you have to have renters insurance for the items that belong to you before you get compensation. |

Smoke damage to what? Personal goods? The walls, ceilings, ect? If you rent and have a renters policy you should be able to recover for your contents. Who ever owners the apartment if you rent would be responsible for the damages to the apartment itself. Your carrier will subrogate against the neighbors policy and will not effect you unless there is a recovery made and then you will get some or all of your deductible back depending upon state law in Pa. regarding such. Your question is vague, next time look at your question to see if the rest of us can figure out what you are asking for. |
