i believe that when you apply for life insurance for yourself, you can include your family. because there is a section on the fill out form called "beneficiary/dependent" in which you can write the name of your family members. |

You will want to decide why you need life insurance? Who relies on you for financial support?
Then decide how much life insurance you need. You can do this by using a life insurance needs calculator online at http://www.term-life-online.com
Then consider how long you need life insurance, how many years? Term life insurance provides low cost protection for 1-30 years.
Permanent life insurance provides lifetime coverage as long as you pay your premiums. Permanent life insurance usually costs 2-3 times more than term life insurance for younger people.
You can use the yellow pages to find a local life insurance agent to review your life insurance needs and help you find the right life insurance.
Or, you can visit a life insurance quote service online and request free life insurance quotes from multiple carriers.
Make sure you compare rates from several companies because prices do vary between insurers.
Choosing to pay your premium once per year (annually) may save you money compared to paying monthly.
Your quotes should show you the type of policy, company name, premiums, and financial rating. Financial rating is an indicator of the insurance company's ability to meet their financial obligations.
I hope that helps. Best of luck to you. |

You go to a local agent, and they can help you find it, and help pick what you want.
Be sure to SET THE GOAL before you meet with the agent, so you don't get sold on something you don't NEED. |

The amount of life insurance you will need is based on your income, your debts, your age, and your family situation (how many kids, how old, etc). The purpose of life insurance is to cover lost income if someone in your household should die (someone who earns an income, that is). There are lots of calculators out there (do a google search on "life insurance calculator" to find some -- I've listed my favorite one below -- this one will do the calculation, but also give you some suggestions about your own unique situation). But basically, you're going to need an amount of money which would keep the surviving members of your family out of financial trouble should a wage-earner die.
Term life insurance is usually the better bet. Term insurance gives you some amount of money upon the death of the person covered. Universal or whole life insurance is another option -- it has a "savings" component as well, but usually isn't as good of an idea because the premiums (the amount you pay) are much higher and the "savings" component usually isn't as good of an investment as you could do on your own. But whole life insurance may make sense if you need some additional incentive to save. So if you have some will-power, the best thing to do is buy a term policy that covers your loved ones. Then look at what you saved over buying a whole life policy, and be sure to put that much away in savings -- invested properly to earn a good rate of return.
Some insurance agents may try to convince you to buy life insurance for your children (if you have any) but that is usually a bad idea. You would be better off putting that money into a savings account for those children yourself, as you will earn a better rate of return on it. Sometimes life insurance agents will point out that if, heaven forbid, your child were to die, you'd want to be able to pay for a funeral. If you are worried about that, then the savings account above serves the same purpose. |
