The best thing for you to do is to protect yourself so you don't become the victim of identity theft. Usually title fraud is perpetrated by individuals that have assumed the identity of the home owner.
How do you protect yourself from identity theft?
To start with, don't leave documents with information about you laying around or throw them in the trash. Buy yourself a good paper shredder and shred all of your bills, bank statements and anything else you normally throw into the recycling bin or trash that has your personal information on it once you are done with them. Tearing them in half just doesn't cut it anymore.
Another way to protect yourself?
NEVER give out personal information in response to unsolicited emails or phone calls you may receive. A bank will never ask you for your PIN number or your SIN number through email or over the phone.
One more way to protect yourself?
Make sure your birth certificate and SIN card are in a secure place either in your home or a Safe Deposit Box. Also put all bills and revenue Canada information away in a locking file cabinet etc. Be conscientious about your surroundings when providing personal information. You never know who may be listening.
So.... Title Fraud???? If you haven't done so already, purchase Title Insurance through your real estate lawyer. Although it won't protect you against identity theft, it should provide for you the proceeds from the fraudulent sale of your house in the event that someone perpetrates you and sells your house out from under you. |

Title insurance is not intended to protect you against identity theft. The purpose is to assure that the title was clear of any claims on the day you transfer it to your name. The only reason they ask you to prove your identity is to determine if you have any claims for money against you which need to be settled prior to a transfer of title. |

If you are concerned about identity theft and everyone on here should be, you really need to get protection. Title insurance is not the best way to do it. Email me if you are looking to protect your identity. |
