Cunning Linguist | How come, My friend paid £2000 for a Diamond ring, but its insured for £6000? |
I thought if you bought a ring it was certified when you bought it at the price you bought it, therefore any insurance company would only insure it for the amount you paid!?
Any ideas? |

Some jewelers like to make you think you got a much better deal than you actually did, so they inflate the value of the jewelry on the appraisal. What happens, though, is that if the insurer can replace the item for (in your friend's case) $2000 instead of the $6000 they're insured for then that's all they'll get. And then they've been paying for more insurance than they can ever actually collect on.
We always recommended our clients to reputable independent jewelers who would give a fair estimate of it's value in their appraisal and recommend they insure it for that. Not all of our clients listened to us, though, and so as long as they had the appraisal we would have to insure it for that amount if they wanted, even if it was overinflated. They could insure it for less than the appraised value, but few did.
I'm sure some people really do get spectacular deals, but they are few and far between. |

I think with jewellery its insured mainly for repair rather than replace (e.g. if the ring broke and costs £200 a time to fix, she'd be covered if she broke it 29 more times lol) |

Diamonds typically appreciate, and there is the matter of replacement cost. Sometimes diamonds/gemstones are appraised at values higher than what they were paid for in retail dollars. |

It is specific thing..
it depends on many conditions:
Is the ring insured to full cost or a fraction of it?
How will you need to prove the ring vanished if you make a claim?
Are there any circumstances that aren't covered? (What if your ring flies off at the circus and gets trampled by elephants, for example?) ... |

Some jewelers advertise that the diamonds they sell are such a good price that they will be appraised at a higher value. I had a ring with many tiny diamonds insured. It was a mid- price ring. I lost one of the diamonds and the insurance company paid to replace it. I had to use the jeweler that they wanted me to. Turns out they used Baily, Banks and Oodles of money. I am sure they charged more than your mom and pop shop to do the repairs.Thereby if they had to replace an entire ring it would have cost more than I paid. |

You can insure anything for any price you want, but if anything happens and there is a loss then your friend will have to prove the value to the insurance company then. And if its not to that value then he is paying over the odds because its not worth that, also as already said the value could be a lot more than what was paid. |

It's probably insured for $6000. So that's like what, 15 pounds? He's just making sure if they move over here they don't get completely screwed when she loses it on the plane. They insure it for more so they can lose it later on and make money. It's a con and you're friend is a dirt bag. |
