How do I convince my insurance that this medical bill should be COVERED?!?
About 5 years ago I was unable to get an appointment at my PCP, but I was referred to the after-hours clinic to see a doctor. I had been to the clinic before and they are part of the same medical group, and my insurance paid the bill. This paticular time, they are telling me the doctor that saw me was not on my "plan". I specifically asked when I arrived for the appointment if he was, and they told me yes. I have haggled with my insurance company off and on for years to take care of it, but I'm not winning. It is on my credit report now and I want it off! I guess I could pay it off but I really feel like it is their responsibility.
Any words from the wise?

If this happened 5 years ago, there's nothing you can do.

The Department of Insurance won't even jump in on something that old.

You have appeal rights for claims, but they must be followed within the appropriate timeframe. Its your responsibility to make sure that you follow up on the appeals in the correct time, and if you let it slide, it lets the insurer off the hook.

Sorry...if this happened 5 months ago, I might be able to give you some advice. But 5 years ago? Its just not going to happen. Sorry.

Depending on your insurance, the facility may have been on your plan, but not in your specific network. It happens with larger plans (i.e. Aetna, BCBS, United Healthcare, etc.) that have hundreds, if not thousands, of networks, and since technically, the burden of knowing if a specific provider is in their network falls on the patient, you're kind of at a loss. What you can do is tell them they paid the previous bill, but that's no guarantee since contracts change.

Yep, it's not the CLINIC's responsibility to be sure the provider is in network - it's yours. And if it's been six months since the declination in writing, it's most likely too late to appeal the claim in writing.

I think you're going to have to pay this.

I have run into this. Unfortunately, using the same medical group does not mean that all the doctors within it belong to the same insurance networks. And you can't take the verbal word of ignorant medical receptionists. You have to personally verify with the insurance company first that your specific provider is "in network."

All that crapo paperwork they make you sign says that its up to you to verify and that you are responsible for all charges not paid by insurance.

Been there, done that.

have you talked to the medical facility to see if they could have billed it differently so that it could have been covered. If too much time has past( years) I believe that you may be out of luck.

Call your local department of insurance and sue your insurance carrier for this mistake. Someone dropped the ball, and they are trying to make you pay for it. Don't tolerate it!

Document as much as you can and take it to court.

You could just keep calling your insurance to bug them about it. You could also try filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance in your state. Call the clinic again and advise them of your situation and find out if that doctor is still in-network or not. Also, if it was an emergency visit....your insurance should understand that you could not wait to see an in-network doctor. I have seen some insurance companies pay an out of network doctor at an in network rate because an in network doctor was not available at the time medical services were provided. I would try calling one more time and working it out if possible.
