How do I find out if a business is licensed, bonded and insured?
I am wanting to find this out because of a ceiling repair company came into my home and has stolen an Ipod nano in the room that was being repaired.

WhatAmI?
Well, in Washington State you can log into the Department of Licensing and enter the business name and search for its information.

I am sure the same sort of online search is possible in other states.

Jacko
You should have asked them for a certificate of insurance before they did the work on your house. If that didn't happen you probably won't get one from them now, especially if you're accusing them of stealing an ipod from you. Your best bet is to contact the police and file a report against the company. Considering their deductible on the insurance policy is probably $1000, it wouldn't cover a ipod anyway. At least the police report could intimidate them into paying for it or returning it to you. Good luck.

State licensing boards have all this info on every legal contractor.

The BBB is a PAID membership and not every company belongs. Nor do companies have to release their private business to them.

We have been in business 25 years and if you call the BBB you will get no info on us because I refuse to pay for my referrals.

And the BBB does not regulate anyone. Your state issues all licenses and that is where you need to go.

Check with the Better Business Bureau. If they are in the data base somewhere they will be listed and they can get that information and more in seconds. And they can give you advice on how to proceed from there on any stolen items. Good luck.

I think ceiling repair is classified as either home remodeling, roofing, or construction. This would be licensed by the state, not the federal government, so you have to contact the particular agency in your particular state that does the licensing.

For the license, you check with the local building code office. For insured, you request that they provide you with a certificate of insurance, naming you (with your name and address) as the certificate holder. It will list their agent on it, and you can call the agent to verify that it hasn't been forged (happens A LOT). For the bonded part, if the bond isn't naming YOU (which means, you sign, and receive a copy fo the bond naming you), then the bonding part means squat, because they aren't bonded to YOU, and you can't collect.

The BBB and police department do NOT track licensing, bonding, or insurance, so don't waste your time contacting them.

Call them and ask them, if they say they are, ask to see a copy of their policy/bond paperwork.

The BBB would also be a good route, but if they were licensed in 2005 and never renewed, and nobody reported them, they may not have the most updated information.

The best thing to do is to ask to see proof and follow-up on it.

You'll need to file a police report though regardless of their insurance situation.

gm
call the bbb and the contact the police

It's a girl due 5/11/09
Call them up and tell them you want a certificate of insurance for Workman's compensation and general liability. Most companies are not bonded for all jobs though. It is very costly and sometimes not necessary. But, if the better business bureau doesn't have that info tell them you need a copy for your insurance.

you shouldn't have left it out and you should ask for a certificate of insurance and check out if they are on the better business website. never leave repair men alone in your home!
