How do I get health insurance for my baby to be born in April?
I am self-employed, therefore have a limited health insurance plan just for me & my husband (In other words, no employer health insurance). To keep my premiums affordable, I have a very high deductible, no maternity coverage (I am paying cash to a midwife), very bare bones, in other words. Can anyone direct me as to what company/where to start?
The one company I inquired with told me I could not even submit the application until my newborn was 32 days old. Is this standard practice?
Thanks for your help. I really detest the subject altogether!
Any insurance company will have a waiting period for a newborn. The baby has to "pass" their first few medical checkups to make sure they have no expensive medical conditions before the insurance company will accept them. Most of the insurers I'm familiar with won't cover a newborn until they are anywhere from 6-10 weeks old. (The only exception to this would be if you already have family coverage and just want to add the newborn to your existing policy - if that's the case, check with your agent/insurance company to find out how to do that.)
You can gather information on insurance companies ahead of time, but won't be able to purchase any coverage until after the child is here and after they are determined to be "healthy." Sorry.
Otherwise, you can inquire to see if you meet the financial requirements for Medicaid or other public insurance programs for children in your state.
P.S. Either you or your husband could seek a job that comes with group health coverage...the baby would be able to be added to a group policy also. Just one final option to consider.

The only thing I can suggest is do research at a welfare office. I guess it depends on what state you are in but most do offer a program called Healthy Start Healthy Babies that will help YOU and help the Baby from the time of birth up. The only thing about that is you have to find a peditritian that takes the type of insurance most of the time it is a doctor through a childrens hospital. The insurance for the child is up to the age of 18 or 21 if they are in college and won't matter what you make. But after having the baby you will only be covered for the post partum care. GOOD LUCK!!!!! and don't 4 get to breathe!!!!!

no one wants your unborn at this point as they are liable if the baby has needs and that is why the waiting period. If that becomes a problem then medicaid is the only place to go
Sorry

You cannot insure an unborn child. As far as a waiting period once the child is born, that will vary from insurer to insurer.

At this point no company is going to take in $100 per month to know they have to shell out thousands a few months later. It's just not a smart business decision.
Hopefully you at least have an HSA so you can tax deduct the expenses. Also, hopefully this was something you discussed with your insurance broker and they at least explained the process to you. In other words that when you bought a plan without maternity coverage it wasn't a surprise to you.
I do my best to sell any female a plan with maternity coverage and if they opt for another plan they fully understand what they are getting into and the potential risks of getting pregnant without it.
Also, fortunately in my state they can get a full plan with full maternity for less than $100-$200/month.
