How do I go about getting jewellery valued for insurance purposes and how much will it cost?

Phone a few jewellers in your area and ask if they perform valuations. If not then ask whom they recommend. Call them in turn and ask what they charge. They need to be suitably qualified and provide a certificate which will be acceptable to your insurer, so it would be worth asking your insurer what qualifications and proof they want.

My wife had her engagement ring valued many years ago after having it made to her own design. A very professional lady examined it, tested the gold content and pronounced on the carat values of the stones. We paid a small percentage of the valuation and received a formal certificate, showing her name and qualifications on headed paper, to show to the insurers. I think that she was a National Association of Goldsmiths Registered Valuer.

We still have the certificate, but our insurance valuation has been idex-linked for the last fifteen years, going up by inflation every year.

The two issues you will face are:
1/ Individual item limit
2/ Total value of all "personal possessions" or jewellery.

Check your policy limits. If you think that you have items over the individual limit, then you probably need to get these valued and declared on the policy. If you think that the total may be over (the purchase price is a good guide to replacement value) then get the main items valued and make sure that they are all insured.

Best tip is to take photos of all of your possessions, inc good close ups of your jewellery, pictures etc. If you have a break-in you might forget what was tucked away in your jewellery box or in a drawer. Apart from getting a safe, a good idea I heard was to store your jewels in the pockets of clothes hanging in your wardrobe, or pinned to dresses, as most thieves won't look twice at clothes!

most jewellers charge a percentage of the value, others charge a fixed rate on the basis thatits the same work to value a £10000 ring as a £1000 ring, phone round a few first. Most insurance companies dont want a valuation until the value is £1000+

Depending on what you are having appraised, you may pay a lot more than $25. A nice solitaire with a complete report, photo, & certification can easily cost over $100

find a jeweler you can trust ask around most dont charge anything some charge a very small fee I paid 5 bucks to get my last one done

Loollea
select a local jeweler you like and ask if they do appraisals
most only charge a percentage of the value of the item

kytho
Reputable jewellers charge very little, if anything at all to give valuations.

If you go to the place where you got the jewelry, the appraisal should be free. If you can't do that, expect to pay about $25 an appraisal.
