JENRD | How do I know that my husband put me as a beneficiary? |
MY husband and I are having issues and he just started a new job to where he has to elect new insurance. How do I know that he has even listed me as the beneficiary instead of everything to his daughter? |

The person who stated that it is "mandatory in all states" that a spouse needs to sign off on an employer life insurance policy is wrong. (Perhaps they are thinking about 401K plans? A spouse does have to sign paperwork if they are not going to be named a beneficiary on a retirement plan, I believe.)
As far as the life insurance goes...the only way you could find out who the beneficiary was would be to ask your husband. If he doesn't want to tell you, then there's no other way for you to find out.
A person can name whomever they want as a beneficiary for life insurance. And frankly, if he has a daughter, she probably should be the beneficiary.
Sorry. As someone else mentioned, if you want life insurance on your husband with you as the beneficiary, then always have the option of purchasing a policy yourself. |

You don't know, he can change it so even if he does have you one day he might the next. In some states he would need to leave you something. Since he has a daughter if she is a child he may want to give her the money since he won't be their to raise her.
If you are a healthy women he may think you can support yourself and is daughter can't. |

You won't know. He is not required to tell you, and even if he did he could change it the next day.
While another answerer is correct than in some states you would be entitled to part of his estate if he were to die while you are married, his life insurance would not be included in that, as it's not part of his estate unless he makes the estate the beneficiary. He likely did not do that.
Good luck! |

There is no way of knowing. Beneficiary's are not notified of such things and really it is only your husband's business. |

IT depends where you live. Some places it is required that the spouse is listed as the beneficiary.
If you don't live in a location where it's manditory, you really have no way of knowing for sure unless you ask him, open his mail or wait for him to die and find out. It is his insurance and he has every right to decide who he wants as the beneficiary. If you are concerned and him dying and leaving you with nothing, then you need to discuss this with him and possibly take out a policy on him where you own it and then you have control over who the beneficiary is. |

The only way to be sure that you are his beneficiary, is to change the ownership of a policy to YOU, so that only YOU can change the beneficiary clause.
That means, YOU have to pay the premiums.
This doesn't work, when the insurance is through his job. So if YOU want insurance on him, ask him if he'd agree to let you buy a policy on him.
Otherwise, he can change the beneficiary every other day if he wants, and you'll never know if it's you or not. |

When my husband made any changes to plans provided by his employee I had to be notified and submit a signed and notarized agreement to the change. I am positive this is mandatory in all states.
Ask your husband to show you the paperwork or you will call Human Resources yourself |
