How do I obtain event insurance?
For my wedding, the venue told me I need to purchase event insurance to cover the place for $1 million. He said it would cost around $100 to get it. Where can I get this?

Well, you START with the guy that writes your renters insurance or your homeowners - in some states, you can get an endorsement to that policy for about that price.

But if you live in a state where you can't add it on, it's going to cost a lot more than $100 - through an independent agent - so I'd ask THAT GUY for an agent to call to sell you the coverage.

Contact your insurance agent either for your house or auto and they will provide you the information, seeing your only doing it for one night, they usually don't charge you much for it, I think the last time I only had to pay $15 through Statefarm, don't waste your time getting a new policy from another insurance agent.

The very best place to get it is from the person that carries your Renter's or home insurance. But wait...I don't own a home, nor do I own a Renter's policy. What do I do now???

You should immediately purchase a renter's policy. They are very inexpensive, and they are just a good idea to have.

Now, step 2. Go to the individual from whom you bought the Renter's policy and tell him, "I need event insurance for my wedding. Make it so." He may look at you funny due to your rather peremptory tone, but he will probably do your bidding. After a modest fee of $50 - $100. Most of these policies last for 24 hours only, so make sure your schedule fits.

On occasion, you will get one of these poor saps like myself who, when asked about the one-day event coverage, will look at you with a blank stare, as if to say, "this alien creature seems to be speaking English, but they are asking for some coverage which does not exist. How do I deal with this creature from another planet?" Not to worry. There are creatures called "underwriters" who despite being from Satan on occasion, really do know insurance policies. Direct said poor sap to contact the underwriter (yes, right now, pick up the phone and call the underwriter, you dimwit. You have the number, I can see it in your rolodex) and the underwriter will figuratively lay his hands on the poor sap, and the scales of ignorance will fall from his eyes. In addition to witnessing education in action, you will be the proud possessor of one-day event certificate.

Hopefully this has been educational.

I would call and independent broker, they will get you their best price. i dont know about $100 though. you can check with a personal lines or commercial lines agent. look in the yellow pages, and get calling, and keep calling.

If you have homeowners or renters insurance, depending where you are, it may very well be automatically covered on the form. You will need to increase the liability to $1,000,000 which is a minimal cost for a year (usually about $15 if you have $500,000 now or $20-25 if you have $300,000). Call your agent to be sure. Just be careful if you are serving alcohol, there could be limiting endorsements in your state, again, check with your agent. Then, once your agent tells you you are covered, the venue will probably want a certificate of insurance which your agent can provide to you.
If this is not covered by your homeowners policy for some reason, if you buy an event liability policy the cost will usually be about $500 minimum premium, since it is a commercial form.
