if there is a medical need for a motorized wheelchair, medicare will cover 80% of the contracted rate. your secondary insurance should pick up the rest. if not, medicaid will cover the balance.
a prescription is needed by your doctor.

most nursing homes do not bill medicare for wheelchairs as they are considered durable medical equipment, and there is specific criteria to meet to be able to bill medicare. the central supply department at your facility most likely deals with a specific supplier. if not, contact medicare and they will let you know of the nearest contracted provider.

It is just a law. Nursing homes do not allow power wheelchairs. Not much can be done.

~~Your doctor needs to order it for you. Once the medical proof is provided then they will cover a motorized wheelchair. The doctor sends in the request along with his report of findings, and with the insurance you have it will be completely covered. Just tell the doctor to justify the reason for why you are not able to operate a manual wheelchair. If you need to have help in speaking with your doctor, the nursing home has staff to mediate on your behalf.~~

If you are a resident in a nursing home, by law the administrative staff MUST assist you in obtaining a new wheelchair that fits your needs. As long as motorized chairs are permitted in their facility, they MUST help you maintain as much of your self assistance as possible. This includes you being able to get around independently in a motorized wheelchair. I suggest speaking with the nursing desk and requesting to speak with a social worker. She can best assist you with insurances. It's her job!
