How do i get someones social security?
i was told that people pay into a social security account of some sort. my mother is deceased, left no will that i know of, where do i go to get her social security? how do i get it?

I am sorry for your loss.

Yes, people pay into Social Security--not voluntarily--throughout their lives. If they retire, they can collect some of that money. If they die, that money is goes to other people in the Social Security system, including immigrants who may have moved to this country shortly before retirement or who never paid into the system.

President Bush wanted the money to belong to the person who paid into the system and allow the money to be passed on to that person's family. The Democrats blocked this "ownership" proposal, calling it dead on arrival. So you can thank the Democrats for keeping this money out of your hands.

if you are over 18 - then you don't have a claim

if you are under 18 - your guardian needs to contact the Social Security Office

You only receive your social security if you are a minor and your parent dies...

Social security isn't like a bank account. The money gets pooled and paid out to the current recipients, so the social security you are paying is probably going out to people on social security today, and your kids will be paying your social security payments...that is why they say the social security will no longer be viable very soon because all the boomers will soon be being paid as they retire from the workforce.

...and realize, that most people on social security have received more money than they actually paid in...

Well, there IS no "social security account". So it's not like a bank account sitting there. It's effectively a type of welfare coverage. You pay payroll taxes while you work, then when you retire, you get a monthly check, funded by CURRENT workers who are paying payroll taxes.

It's not "inheritable".

JUST GO ON-LINE AND TYPE IN SOCIAL SECURITY , AND YOU WILL FIND A LINK THAT TAKES YOU TO ANYONE THAT IS DECEASED, THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. ONCE A PERSON HAS PASSED IT BECOMES PUBLIC INFORMATION.ALSO THE FUNERAL HOME SHOULD HAVE IT ON FILE. I AM SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR MOTHER. BUT AS FAR AS BENEFITS YOU HAVE NONE, AFTER THE AGE OF 18,16 IF NOT IN SCHOOL YOU CAN'T DRAW ANYTHING.
