You don't, except by their actions. Any agent who tells you there's no potential conflict of interest is full of it.

On one hand they want the repeat business and personal recommendation of clients like yourself on the other they get paid by the insurer.

And then there's the biggest potential conflict of interest, selling you what's best for you versus what earns them the greatest amount of commission.

It's all about having faith and trust in a person.

If you don't have faith in your agent, get another one. They aren't exactly rare.

Try using an independent agent. Since they use multiple companies, it is more likely that they will do what is best for the client to retain the business and obtain referrals.

What they say has to make sense. In my state I'm one of a few that sell the most competitive plan and that's because that plan pays the least.

However, I sell 10 times the plans that the average guy sells because my clients come back to me over and over again and refer to me over and over again.
