kws1222 | How do i pay for health care? |
I feel stuck. I'm a student and going to school full time in a master's program. I'm too old to be under my parents insurance, not married, and am finding it difficult to work enough hours for my work to pay for my insurance. What are my options? Are there any? |

Most schools have a student health policy that's dirt cheap, that you can join. That's the CHEAPEST way to get health insurance.
The second cheapest way is through an employer; the third is a private policy - which is usually the most expensive way to go. |

There’s a new company offering low cost individual health plans in Texas for young, reasonably healthy people, and is a great health insurance solution for students in higher education programs. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities of a healthy person. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event. You’d have to look into it for more details, but that was the gist. Even if you’re not in Texas, they’ll be offering plans in additional states soon. Plus, they’re backed by a traditional insurance company that’s been around for over 70 years, so even though they’re new on the scene, they have a solid reputation behind them. Check it out: http://www.precedent.com - Good luck! |

Your age should not be a factor as to whether you qualify for your parents insurance if they claim you as a dependent. I would suggest speaking with your parents and see if they still claim you as a dependent. It's a tax advantage for them if they do. If that is the case, by law, you would qualify for insurance coverage through their provider. |

Are you sick? Do you have a pre-existing health problem? How much longer do you plan on being in school? One option, is to wait till your out of school, or Find out how others have dealt with Insurance questions. Talk to them. I'm sure you not the only person with this particular problem. |

As a Group benefits Broker - Most insurance companies will remove children off of a parents plan at 18 UNLESS that dependent is a full time student. Once the student reaches age 23-24-25 (depends on state), then you are on your own.
If you are younger and healthy without current maintenance medications, go to ehealthinsurance.com or some other website like it and explore purchasing a high deductible plan that will cap your risk. In other words, if you suddenly have to spend a month in the hospital, you will not have to go bankrupt. This should keep the premium to less than $100 if you are young and healthy. The rates depend on what you buy, what state ect. |

Speak to someone at your school. Many universities have medical care available for students and they can also direct you to specific insurance plans that are geared toward college students in just your situation. The plans and availability vary by state. |

I would open up a health savings account. This works as an IRA, is pretax, and rolls over from year to year. Then fund the account to cover the deductible of a higher deductible insurance plan offerred by many carriers. That way, this money will pay for the deductible (and premiums if you wish) and the insurer will cover the cost of anything over in case of need. |
