The websites for most state insurance departments will allow you to look up agents by name. The listing will tell you their current insurance licenses, and their complaint/violation history.

Genuine what? A genuine human? Genuinely licensed to sell insurance? Genuinely honest?
If you're trying to figure out if he's license, check with your state department of insurance.
All the other possibilities I can think of for "genuine", you'll probably have to go on your gut instinct.

The easiest way is to contact your state's insurance license bureau. that way you can verify his or her status.

If you are selling insurance in the UK, you must be either authorized by the Financial Services Authority or tied to another company who is authorized and keeps tabs on you on the FSA's behalf.
You can check the register at http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register
You should be able to check with their business name etc or if your feeling cheeky, ask for their FSA Firm Reference Number.

First off the agent is a sales man, his job is to get you signed and he will do whatever it takes. You have to decide if the price is right for you. Once you had signed with the company the agent is out of the picture for any claims. The agent will come back into the picture if he feels the need to up-sell you on additional policies or coverage. But do not think that he/she is your agent, they work for the insurance company and that is who pays them. Remember if you have a claim against you will have to fight the other insuracne company and your own company if you disagree with them.
