How do you become a claims investigator for an insurance agent?
my mom has been in the insurance business for a year now and needs to make more money. She wants to go in another direction but still stay in the insurance business. She is interested in the investigative work as well as claims adjustment. She is about to finish her associates degree ( in business) and then figure out what to do. can anyone give some advice?!

Most insurance companies require a college degree. Many want a 4 year degree but many will accept a 2 year degree - especially if you have good experience in your back ground.

The main thing is to find a job.

The big companies tend to have the highest turn over.....and therefore, the most job openings.
But, they are also the ones that tend to treat their employees the worst. So, if you can get in with one of them do it......suck it up for a year or two and if the place is really bad to work for...get on with another company.

Claims is a tough job. Not everyone is cut out for it.

You have to be able to deal with very high amounts of stress -- having more work than hours to do it in. You have to be good at problem solving, thinking outside the box and thinking on your feet. Organization skills are a big help. Strong customer service skills are required.

If your mom has contact with adjusters from time to time in her job....start to ask them about the job and their company. Most adjusters are more than willing to tell you about the job and the company.

Claims is a good job. But it's a hard job.

I would suggest a different career.
I was an adjuster for many years, but got sick of fighting with greedy a**holes and their fraudulent claims, ignorant claims managers telling me I overpaid another one, contractors inflating bids, and power-mad bureaucrats at the commerce department threatening me with fines every time some greedy a**hole complained.
It's just not healthy. There are better jobs out there.

You need licenses to be a private investigator, or a claims adjuster. One year in the business, doing sales, isn't much experience - it's not going to get her a job doing either of those things.

I'd suggest maybe she should look at getting a job at an agency, as a CSR. The money is pretty rotten at first, but builds quickly with experience - IF she's good.

If you would like a basic entry into claims investigation and negotiation go to www.quinn-insurance.com, look at the careers section. Within the UK section, there is a position called Regional Claims Manager.

Good luck
