How do you find out about an old insurance co. & who bought them out?
If it was a recent buyout (within the last few years), you can probably still search for the name of the old insurance company under www.AMBEST.com. This is a rating website that gives financial strength information about insurance carriers. It also shows if that carrier is a subsidiary of another larger company, or if there is a buyout in progress.

Call you state Insurance Department, there should be a toll free number in the phone book.

A good source might be your state insurance bureau. They should be able to tell you as they are responsible for keeping up with those outfits. You will probably have to send your request in writing and it will take a few weeks for a reply. They may not have the answer but may tell you how to find it.
Another source to try is to try a google search of that name.

Your state's insurance trade association is a good place to start.
A state insurance department is a good idea, but they have no legal obligation to tell you. And, if a company was smaller and domiciled in a different state, they may not even know.
A trade association is a better bet because often the companies are their members.
They have large books with the successor companies and their acquisitions and predecessor companies in them and can easily tell you the successor company is, if you still can't find it on your own.
