How do you find out if an old insurance company still exsists?
my father in law passed away and had a life insurance taken out some 68 years ago. we are trying to find out how we can cash in the policy as we cant find out any details of if the company is still about , taken over etc. are there any companys that may be able to offer advice.
Hi - in part, this question depends on where you are. I will answer assuming that you're in mainland Britain - if you're not please post additional information stating which country you're in.
The best place to start would be the Financial Services Authority Register (http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register) - this is the official register of all currently authorised financial services firms, and you may be able to trace the firm through that if you know the name of the company or their principal office address, or even better: their registration number (check any correspondence from the firm for details).
You can also try Companies House (http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/WebCHeck/findinfopage/) to see if the firm is registered as a limited company within England, Scotland and Wales.
Finally, if you're not able to find the company you're looking for via the FSA Register or Companies House, contact the Financial Ombudsman Service Consumer Helpline on 0845 080 1800 - they will point you in the right direction.
I'm happy to look on your behalf if you post the name of the firm, otherwise I wish you the best of luck finding them!

You can google the company and see what you come up with but the best way is to contact the department of insurance in the state that the policy was issued. They can tell you about the company or which company took over the policy.

Your best bet is to contact your state insurance department. They will have a list of companies other companies have bought. If the policy is on your father- in- law you will need to file a death claim, not cash it in. The company will pay you the face amount plus interest from his date of death.
