The simple answer is to not treat them like a customer.
Treat them like a friend, whom you happen to be offering service to. Treat them like you have to see them day in and day out, after this transaction is done. You want to give them the very best of your abilities.
Too many times, sales people are caught in the mode of offering the bare minimum. Furthermore, they are only answering what the client is asking, rather than telling the client what they really want to know.
What I mean by that is that you should be listening to your clients, so that you can anticipate what they really want to know. Remember that your client probably doesn't know your field as well as you do ... thereby, they probably don't know the right questions to ask for the information they need.
It's your job to anticipate their needs, and tailor your product as best you can to their needs.
This leads to one of the biggest tools you have. Turn them down when necessary. Never force your product on someone that doesn't need it. They'll inevitably be dissatisfied, meaning that they are not referring you to their friends, and will not consider you when they DO need your product.
In short, I'm a firm believer in relationship selling. Position yourself so that people want to do business with you. They may not need your product or service right now, but when they do, if you've built a strong relationship, they'll call you first. |
