How does a person who is self employed go about collocting unemployment?
My friend who ownes her own business, recently lost her lease and had to close her business. Can she collect unemployment and what are the criterion for doing so?

No. Self employed persons don't qualify for unemployment.

She should get a new lease somewhere else, and reopen her business. Or go work for someone, where she WOULD get unemployment benefits, eventually.

In order to collect unemployment, your friend would have had to pay into the unemployment system in the state she had her business. If she lived in one state and the business was in another, there may be a reciprocity agreement between the states.

In order to pay into the unemployment system, your friend would have had to have a formal payroll set up with the company and the company would have had an account with the state's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. There would have been a quarterly payment to DLLR...the payment would have been based on whatever the state's unemployment rate and salary cap is.

Now, in the state I live, it is not possible to collect unemployment if one "looses" his/her job without cause. It is possible that the state in question here views things the same way. In other words, they may view closing the business because the lease was lost not a reason to close the business. The state may see it that the business could have moved to another location.

Your friend's best bet would be to contact the local unemployment office and talk to someone directly and explain the situation.

now she needs to find a job.
as for collecting 'unemployment' NOPE.
to collect u / she must work for some one else at least 6months full time in many states.

Many self employed people do not pay into the unemployment fund for federal or state when they do not have employees. If she had no employees except herself and did not pay into the system, then no.

she can collect, but will need documation of her records. Most business owners don't pay themselves a salary so it will not work otherwise.

NOPE! Government, public, politicians pretty much tell the Self-employeed that they are the back bone of America one minute then tell them to F*CK off the next.

Tell your friend she was brave to go out and try and stake her claim.
