steephillfarm1994 | How does an insurance company decide if they are going to total out a car? |
So last week, my 2001 Ford Focus, which I still owe $1500.00 on rolled down the driveway. Kelly Blue Book says its worth $1800. The estimate I got from the repair shop was between 1850. and 2000 depending on some sort of paint. What is going to happen when the insurance adjuster comes out? Will they/can they force me to total it? Someone told me if its more than 2/3rd then they wont fix it.... HELP, I need advice.. |

Hi, my name is Eunice Saunders and I am an Insurance Agent. Most insurance companies go by the blue book value and it sounds like your car is totaled to me. They will send an Adjuster to look at the damages and he will access the damages and advise the insurance company as to the best way to handle your claim.......remember their title is "adjuster" which means they adjust.......so if you do not agree with their assessment then argue with them.....remember also that the adjuster works for the insurance company and has the best interest of the company and all other policy holders....he does not work for you...although he will want you to think that your best interest is being served...so you look out for your best interest which is to either get your car fixed or get enough money from the deal to bring you back to a financial condition that is comparable to the condition you were in before your car rolled down the drive. So if they give you blue book value you can pay off the loan you owe and buy another vehicle........remember you can not gain from insurance.....meaning you will never get more than what you had to start with. Good Luck! Eunice |

if it costs more to repair than the car is worth, then the insurance company will total it out, no other options
you may be able to purchase the totaled vehicle back from the
adjuster - ask him |

If the cost to have it fixed is more than the car books for. |

Ok so heres the deal. The insurance adjuster will come out and asses the damage on your car. If the damage is more than a certain percentage of the total value of your car then they will deem it totaled and give you a check for the value of the car. Now if you decide that the car is worth fixing and would like to buy it back from them most insurance companies will allow this. The percentage as far as weather they'll total out your car or not is depend ant on your insurance company.
I've had a few incidences of my own and I hope that this was informative enough for you. Good luck and take care. |

I suppose if it cost as much or more to repair the damaged car than to restore it to suitable condition, the insurance company will total it out. |

they only pay up to 'blue book', like if your cars only worth 1,000, they wont pay for a 5000 repair, they 'total it out' and pay you blue book... you can look up blue online, its kbb.com at least that used to be the site..they dont total it as in wreck it, you can keep your car, so you can got thru insurance, but id sugest calling around for different paint/body shops and pay for it yourself.. |

The Auto Damage Adjuster will do a valuation of your vehicle taking into consideration many factors including mileage, vehicle condition and that adjuster will also research the prices of similar vehicles being sold in your area, after that valuation he /she will make you a total loss settlement offer, you can throw out blue book value they don't consider that at all. Once you accept the offer the adjuster will make payment for the amount of the settlement first $1500.00 to your lienholder then any remaining balance to you. If you're lucky you will get at least the $1500.00 and clear your debt but don't expect much more than that. In the future you may want to buy gap insurance on a new purchase it's worth it. Good Luck and God Bless !!!! |
