on life insurance? |

Please, please read this. Perry made a statement that is not, in and of itself, entirely correct.
I'm in the industry, so I'll explain it.
When an insured dies, the survivors contact the insurance company to make a claim and present a certified copy of the death certificate. A good agent will do almost all the paperwork for the survivors, trying to make the process as easy for them as possible.
Different insurers have different methods of distributing the death benefit. Typically, the two most common were mentioned by the first poster - either lump sum distribution to your beneficiaries, or the creation of accounts that the beneficiaries can draw from via check. Other distribution methods exist.
Perry's mistake was in saying the proceeds go to your estate. While that is possible, that is usually the one thing an insured does NOT want to do. Here is why:
At this time, when an insured dies, the proceeds go to whomever or whatever entity he or she has named as beneficiary, OR to his or her estate. If they pass to a beneficiary, the proceeds pass tax free and totally circumvent the probate process. You just go to the insurance company, do the paperwork, and get the money. No tax, no months-long wait. If an insured names his or her estate as the beneficiary, the money goes through probate, is subject to estate tax and all the rotten mess that goes with that stuff. |

call the insurance co. and they'll send you a form. Fill it out and mail it back to them and usually they pay with in a week. |

you have to have the death certificate then call the insurance company or better yet go there in person |

Someone dies and you're a beneficiary.
Present the death certificate to the insurance company...
They do a mountain of paperwork
They send you a check. |
|

Know More Than I Want To
|
Call the life insurance company, tell them who has passed, and they will tell you what to do. They have their own form that you have to fill out, and you have to send it back along with a certified death certificate. THEN they'll either mail you a checkbook to pull from an account they set up for you or they'll mail you a check for the entire amount. |
