How long after you quit your job does your medical insurance stay in effect?
Are there laws that require how long or is it up to the employer?

You need to ask your employer because plans differ. In my last job it was in effect until the end of the month, but in a previous job it ran for 2 months.

They have to give you the option of continuing the same benefits through a system called COBRA which you can choose to sign up for. In my last job I was paying $40/month for health insurance, but COBRA would have cost me $328. Think about whether you want to take the risk of going uninsured until the plan on your next job kicks in....

ANDY C
30 days unless you made other arrangements with your former employer.

personally my medical insurance is totally independant of any job i have, the 2 do not go hand in hand.

WHEN I LEFT MY COMPANY I WAS ALLOWED TO PAY A MUCH HIGHER MONTHLY PAYMENT(and I do mean higher!) FOR ONE YEAR. I have heard of some WHO give you 30 days)

You should ask your company)

THE PURPOSE WAS TO GIVE ME TIME TO GET MY OWN NEW INSURANCE.

It depends on what your plan states. It could be immediate, end of month, end of pay period. That is something that you will have to ask your employer. There are no laws requiring them to keep it in effect. The only law that there is with regards to continuation of coverage is COBRA but you would have to pay those premiums out of pocket and it is hundreds of dollars, just for 1 person.

Brutus
Usually until the end of the month. Your employer must offer you Cobra insurance until you can find another job. Information on Corbra insurance can be found at http://www.cobrainsurance.com/?source=overture&OVRAW=cobra%20insurance&OVKEY=cobra%20insurance&OVMTC=standard

Our employees were covered until the 1st of the month after the month they leave...we prepaid for the next month. After that Cobra will kick in and offer insurance.
When I was an employee it ws 30 days after you left:)

nighttimewkr
30 days and then they can offer a Cobra plan that is more afforable if you want to keep it.

momof3grmomof1
The end of the current month unless you elect to sign up COBRA which means you pay it all out of your pocket usually at a higher rate.

swt_icebat
usually it's good until the end of that month

up to the employer. everything with health insurance is up to the employer. who they carry, how much of it they pay etc... i just left my job...but i asked before i did if they would let me stay on as it was for a couple of weeks after due to an appointment i had that i didn't want to reschedule. they agreed to do that for me...so, it's all up to them. after that, they usually offer you cobra-which is, essentially...you can keep your health coverage but at full cost to you.

After you quit a job, the Medical insurance stays in effect as long as you keep paying the premium required.

When you decide that you don't have a job and cannot afford to pay for the high Medical Insurance and call them to cancel it that is when your medical Insurances runs out.
But you can get COBRA.

Carlos
zero!!!!
