How much do you usually get from bodily injury?

Jason S
This question is way too broad to even consider an answer. Bodily Injury could come from General Liability or Auto Liability. it would also depend on how you were injured and to what degree you were injured. Please give us more detail.

Thanks!

Are you asking how much you will receive in an accident if you are injured by the other party? Or are you asking how much you should purchase?

If the first, it depends on the accident and how much coverage the other party has on their policy.

For your own coverage, purchase as much coverage as you can afford. Though your State has minimum limits, these usually are not enough to cover you in accidents involving injuries.

Well, it depends on the injury. Most often, car insurance policies will max out at $20,000. If your injuries are clearly worth significantly more, it may be worthwhile to pursue the case in court against the policy holder for money over and above his/her policy. It's a hell of a process, though, so only do this if you REALLY need more than that, and if you think you can actually get it from this person. If it's some guy working for $15/hr or raising a family, it may be very difficult to get money if it will have to involve wage garnishment, and you have to ask yourself if this person deserves to have their quality of life stripped away, or if you need the money that badly. In those cases, there are companies that will take on your garnishment claim and provide you with the money up-front once you get an award (after taking out a very sizeable portion for themselves, of course). But it all depends on the injury and the nature of whatever disability may have been caused, loss of enjoyment of life, and certainly loss of ability to earn wages... not to mention, pain and suffering.

Sometimes, nothing. There are states (and options) that limit BI to nothing, or only for severe injuries (definition of severe varies).

Sometimes, just enough to cover medical bills - especially if it's minor.

Your BEST bet is to ask your agent, with the specifics of your case. There's no hard and fast rule about how much a BI is worth - it's ALL about what a judge/jury thinks it's worth.

Compensation from bodily injury depends on type of injury that you sustained. Depends on the state in which the injury occured. And truthfully, it depends on the insurance company. Some insurance companies are a bit more liberal when it comes to smaller BI claims. The insurance companies see smaller claims as almost "nuisance" like and will compensate fairly and quickly to remove the risk you bring as a injured party. There are a few insurance companies, like Farmers, that are using a BI calculation system that will determine a value range of what the BI is worth based on damage to the vehicle, medical bills cost, age of the person, and other prior injuries that have been aggravated as a result of the new accident.

There are a lot of factors that play into the compensation for a bodily injury. Post another question with the circumstances to your injury. I'm sure you'll be able to get plenty of advise here in this forum.
