Starting out from scratch in auto insurance is damn near impossible. You need support, either from an existing agency or a company. What I mean by this is that a company, such as State Farm, retains you as an agent, trains you, provides you a book of business, and gets you up and running. Unfortunately, these opportunities are very rare and usually go to someone with connections.
Another way is to join an established agency. These positions are usually go to family members or people with connections.
So, how do you get your foot in the door? You find an agency that has a need for a CSR (Customer Service Rep), and start at the bottom. After you put your time in, and learn the business, you can work your way into a position as an agent. |

Usually between 5 - 15% commission; 10% is about right. Commision on renewal varies but is in that ball park. SO to make 30K in commisions you'll need to write about $300K in premium. If you join an established agency, they will want to do a commision split, meaning you'll need to write $600K to get to the same point. For every new customer you pull and MVR & CLUE report (needed for issuing policy) subtract $15 for processing fees.
A better question to ask yourself is how are going to find 300-600 customers per year to pay premium and make you any type of living? Actually you'll need more because unless you're a customer service stud, you'll only retain 80 - 90% of customers. Less if you're auto insurance only (you'll be competing with the Lizard and the cartoon chick in tight cloths). This is what trips up 95% of new agents.
After a few years in the biz, companies can pay other bonuses: profitability (keep your claims down) retention (keep your customers) and growth (keep them coming to us!!) this can add maybe another 5-10% commission to your bottom line.
Needless to say, unless your dad owns an established insurance agency, this won't be easy. You’ll work years and your success is not entirely in your hands; you’re partners with your insurance companies.
My advice: if you want to work in sales, find a more lucrative profession |

Commissions average about 10%.
Agencies get bonuses, etc., that are related to their experience. If you can figure out how to insure people who never have accidents, and never cause accidents, your agency will do well.
It's hard to establish a new agency, though. You have to have a certain volume of business for independent insurance companies to signing you as an agent. If you don't have the cash to buy an existing agency, you're almost forced to work with one of the "captives". |

Not much, if you're working for someone else. With a license, depending on where you are, for personal lines auto, MAYBE $18,000 a year salary, if you're servicing accounts.
Or, if you want to sell, with an agency, 50% of commissions - so you have to sell, sell, sell to earn anything at all. |
