Happily Ever Us! | How much does your home insurance go up with a German Shepherd? |
I'm getting quotes and I'm finding that they are really HIGH! :( |

Your homeowners insurance should not be affected because you own a German Shepherd. They are usually not on the "bad doggy" list. I am very familiar with the most conservative of insurance companies, and none of them have restrictions about German Shepherds. If you do own a notoriously aggressive breed (rottweiler, presa canario, staffordshire terrier or pit bull, or any old fido with a history of aggression or biting) your insurance company will cancel your policy, or just refuse to insure you. They don't mess around when it comes to exotic or aggresive animals. They flat out decline the submission.
Your homeowners rates may be high for a variety of reasons--
~the value of your home
~the condition of your home
~your proximity to the ocean or the coast
~your proximity to a notorious hail belt, tornado zone, fault line or wind zone
~your credit (some insurance companies weight credit scoring heavily into the premium rating.) |

I have heard many stories about insurance going up or they will not insure the house because of the type of dog you have howver I have not found that out to be with Allstate.
I dont think the insurance should go up no matter what type of dog you have.
Try allstate if you havent already. They seem to be pretty cheap. |

Several insurance companies not only won't insure you if you own a german shepherd, but if you're already insured there and they find out that you have one, they will cancel your policy!
A german shepherd is listed on the 'attack breed' list (stupid, I have a GS myself), however, most of them will protect your house, so its a liability issue you're dealing with.
I believe the surcharge is approximately 10% for companies that allow the dog. |

Ours didn't go up at all. I know that many insurance companies will charge a higher price or even deny you totally for owning certain breeds of dogs. I would definately get with some other shepherd owners in your neighborhood to find the best rates.

It shouldn't change at all. I have a dog and it didn't make any difference.
I figure that the chance that you'll be sued from a dog bite is balanced by the dramatic reduction in chance that your home will be burgularized. |

I'm not familiar with ANY insurance companies surcharging, based on the breed of the dog. Either they write the policy with that dog, or they don't. And not all companys have Shepherds on the prohibited breed list - but some do.
You need to ask why the quotes are "so high", and then think to yourself, what about the quote makes you think it's high. Because if you have multiple quotes, all in the same price range, it's not the quotes that are high, it's your expectations that are too low.
But there might be some things the agents can do to lower the cost - like increasing deductibles.
**Tim's wrong, though - insurance companies pay out way, way way more in bite claims, than thefts - they'd rather have a hundred theft claims, than one dog bite claim. They don't "balance out".** |
