This is too complicated of an issue for a message board. Go talk to a licensed insurance agent in your state (or 2 or 3 agents). Be wary of any agent who says that term or whole life is the only way to go. Usually a combination of policies works best.

Whole life is more expensive because you can borrow money against it.
Term is cheap because it is just a set amount of insurance for a set term, maybe an option to renew afterwards.
You should be able to get several hundred thousand for less than 30 bucks if you are younger, if you are older then it is more expensive. It also depends on your current health and if you smoke. Younger women are more expensive later in life because of all the health related problems. I need more info to give you a good answer.
