I am a stay home mom and I have 500,000 policy which would pay off our mortgage, cover the children's college education and free up my husband's income to hire a quality nanny/housekeeper while he works. As we get older (and the children grow up), I plan to reduce the amount of coverage because our mortgage won't be as much and the college funds will have grown. I have a 20 year term policy that is very inexpensive.
My husband is the sole earner in the family and has 10x his annual income in term insurance which would cover our mortgage, children's fund and several years of annual expenses so I would have time to plan our financial future. |

IT depends on how much you can afford. Are you married, have children or people who depend on you for income ? If not you really don't need life insurance. But if you have a family buy only term life insurance. You will be able to buy much more for the money. Youe should try to replace the value of at lease 7 to 10 years of income to take care of your family. Shop around. You'll get many different prices for the same type of insurance. |

I have 50,000 Whole Life 36 / month & 1,150,000 20 level term 53 / month. I am 25 years old , engaged, and making a good income. My mothers father died at 16 years of age it made a bad situation worse. Alot of people think that they only need their mortgage covered, but in todays world where people are not saving any money with two incomes. Do you really think you can retire, pay for your childrens education, and pay all yours bills ( Property taxes, Life expenses, etc) on one income?
Your life is the most important thing you have fully insure it.
You can rebuild a house, you can replace a car, but you are priceless.
In court settlements human life value is used in deciding settlements. Works out to about 20 times your salary. |

The amount you need depends on your specific needs.
Ask yourself what goal are you trying to accomplish. Are you looking to provide income replacement if something happens to you, or cover a mortgage, or estate taxes, maybe a combination of all of these.
If income replacement, ask how long your beneficiary would need your income for to support themselves...many times you hear 10x income, but that probably is not enough, more likely 15-20x income given today's environment, debt loads, etc.. |
