DarkCat | How much should I pay for health insurance? |
I recently started a new job and will soon be eligible for health benefits. Last night I was going through the paperwork to sign up. To my horror I found that for me to sign up (for medical, dental and vision) plus my wife and kids (the family plan) I will be paying nearly $600 every two weeks!
This is almost a third of my take home. Does this sound right? At my previous job I was paying a little more that $200 every two weeks.
Maybe I should go back to the old job... |

It sounds a little steep. However, nobody here knows how rich the benefits are, how big the group is, the ages and health conditions of the group, or how much the employer is kicking in. It sounds like the plan is very rich with little or no deductible or co-payment and that the employer is paying very little. You should call an independent agent to compare what an individual policy would be. Generally, a group plan is less expensive but if you don't need or want the benefits why pay for it. |

Maybe you should. FAmily plan coverage costs about $1200 a month - so it sounds like your employer isn't contributing ANYTHING towards your insurance.
Double check with them. |

This seems very high. Your company probably offers you a cheap rate and charges a lot extra for your family. I would shop around first. In the resource section, I put a site that has many carriers in which you can compare rates. |

It IS quite steep.
Here is a possible solution:
If you Raise the Deductible, you can reduce the Premium, right?
By doing this you will save money. You will do well to save this money!
Now you can get a Discount Health Benefits card that is very affordable. When you use this card for the small expenses like doctor's visits. and check ups you can save significant amounts of money.
Then you can use the insurance for major illnesses.
Does this make sense?
Some details of a good Discount Plan:

maybe so, you may have been making less money; however, your benefit package made up for the difference in pay. You will not find family coverage for less than this except through an employer, so don't waste your time looking around. |

A bi-weekly rate of $600 for a family, even if it does include vision and dental, is extremely high for the area that I am in. That equates to $1,300 per month. It would have to be one rich plan that covers everything with no deductibles to be remotely worth that. As an example, our family plan, which isn't the least expensive runs aroung $750 per month. It has a $25 co-pay for doctor visits, $500 annual deductible per person, $1,500 per family and out of pocket caps of $2,000 per person, $6,000 per family. It's a 80/20 plan.
You might try private insurance (not through your employer) if your and your family's health is good. |

Unless you and your family have some serious health conditions 1200.00 is too much to pay each month for health insurance. My agent can tell you the particulars but I know he can get you a better premium than that. You can contact him at http://www.lvhealthins.com Everyone in that office are great to work with. They can give you quotes for just about every company in the business. |
