Learn to ask better questions. Seriously.
When you ask someone a question in the right way, they feel obligated to give you the answer. Asking good questions can show your level of expertise, demonstrate that you care, and give you information you might not otherwise have. To be a good advisor, you need to do all those things.
Oh, and learn your field backwards and forwards, but that's obvious. |

Listen, listen and listen! Do not give unsolicited advice and don't pretend that you understand a person's problems if you don't. Most people just need a shoulder to cry on. You would also do well to do an accredited course on councilling and start reading some books on the subject in the meantime. |
