1. The easiest way would be to work for an agent or broker and learn the field that way. With that scenario you get paid from the day one.
2. Alternatively you can go to Farmers Insurance and be on commissions only. But you will build your own business. Farmers has very aggressive recruiting program. Just pick up yellow pages and call any local Farmers asking for a referral to a good district manager (not all of them are good). You can even interview a few district managers. Their job is to bring you to the business. Farmers pays you a good subsidy while learning assuming you have a good performance.

you take pre licensing classes and then the state exam. i took a class for 1 week (total of 40 hrs) and then the state exam. it helps if you can get an agency to sponsor you. most will pay for the class and exam if you agree to work for them for a certain amount of time.

Contact the state dept of Insurance commissioners office. Check the website. Ask for the info on getting your license. Either in Life/Health and/or Property casualty. Most States you need to attend a couple days of class time then take your exam. Once you have done this contact a large independent agency or Direct writer. Look at job listings for agents.
Most Direct Writers IE; State Farm Allstate look for "new" young and get going agents. They will train you on their own methods.

If you want to be independent, you just need to check what your state requirments are for licensing.
If you plan on becoming an employee, you need to contact some potential employers and find out what they will do to help you get your license, should they decide to hire you.
Do you want to sell property insurance, health, life ????
In my state of Pa. you would need to get the proper license for the line of business(s) you want to work in.
Check with your state's insurance commission for more information on licensing.
