That is very expensive for age 18, do you have pre-existing conditions? In my area the most expensive plan for an 18 yo male is less than $200. Most are less than $100.

You'll want to visit a local independent agent. This person will know the market in your area and can find the best policy for your situation.

The only way to get free insurance is to go to work for an employer that pays 100% of your health care costs. At your age, the cost of health insurance should be less than $100 a month, even if you are a smoker/tobacco user.

An independent agent should be able to fix you right up with a good plan that is very competitively priced.

If you are healthy, paying $500 a month for health insurance is ridiculous! There is a new company called Precedent that is getting ready to launch in Texas and will offer low cost individual health plans for young, reasonably healthy people. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities of a healthy person. A healthy male 25-years-old (and under) would pay under $100 a month for basic coverage. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event. Find details at http://www.precedent.com - even if you’re not in Texas, they’ll be offering plans in additional states soon. Good luck!

Well, FREE is only going to be welfare insurance. You can apply for medicaid.

But a REAL insurance company shouldn't be charging a healthy 18 year old anywhere NEAR $500 a month. I'd expect it to be much closer to $200 a month, maybe a bit less. OR, you can get a major medical policy, with a $5,000 deductible, for just under $100 a month.

The cheapest place is usually your employer's health plan. If you don't have an employer, or they don't offer health insurance, go to a local, independent agent (start with the guy who writes your car insurance), for a private policy quote.

DO NOT buy your health insurance off the internet. Best case scenario, you'll have to drive 300 miles for an "in network" insurance company. Worst case - you have no "coverage", just a forged policy.

2 options-

Go to college taking the bare minimum of credit hours will allow you to stay on your parents plan if they still consider you a dependent.

$500 is way too high if you are healthy - research other companies and plans. Find an agent or broker in your area.
