Check with the county courthouse; they can tell you where businesses in your county are registered; but it makes more sense just to ask for it from them; in most states they are required to present it for anyone contracting for their services if asked, |

Ask to see it along with insurance papers showing he and his crew are covered for workers compensation injuries and also damage liability coverage for any damage they may cause to your property. Do this before you sign any contract with them. |

The roofer should be able to request a Certificate of Liability for himself showing the coverage limits and the coverage type. If he is insured, any company should be able to provide the proof for you!

Call either your city or county. In my state, the roofer needs to be licensed in the town he wants to obtain business in!
And I made him give me a copy of his insurance policy AND I called to verify that he HAD insurance! |

Check their business card to see if there license number is printed on it? Contact the Better Business Bureau in your area? Contact your local Chamber of Commerce? Contact the agency that issues the licenses in your market area? Ask for the a copy of the license BEFORE the work is completed? Ask if they are also BONDED? Good Luck! :-) |

For the license, you call your licensing authority. Most often, that is your local building department. Make sure the guy's name matches the number - they can look up the number and tell you if it's right. Beware, the latest thing is guys that use someone ELSE'S number.
For the insurance - ask him for a certificate of insurance, naming you certificate holder. His AGENT should send it directly to you, so you know it's not forged. |
