rsa | How to say no to an insurance agent? |
So I spent a few hours with this life insurance agent last weekend discussing various options and she gave me lots of term and whole quotes and paperwork to take home. Did the same with an equally helpful agent of another insurance company thereafter. Quotes vary all over the place, so I intend to consult with one more agent before I decide. Now the problem is how to politely say no to all but one these helpful people? They have already started calling to check if I have decided but I need time to shop around. Hope to hear both from consumers who have faced this situation and insurance salespersons who may perhaps face this frequently. Thanks. |

I'll bet you are a terrific person. The mere fact you realize that the only irreplaceable thing we have is time - part of our life - speaks volumes.
Others have said that "they are accustomed to it" are correct, but that does not mean that salespersons like to hear a "no".
Here is how to get it done:
1. Until you have made a decision, when/if they call say, "I'm still gathering information. I'll call you back when I have made a decision." Don't engage in further discussion. You don't owe them any more of your time - they have had their chance at your business.
2. When you have decided, sign the papers with the salesperson who earned your business. Then DO call all the others and say, "I've signed papers for a plan that suits me better than what you proposed. Thank you very much for the time you invested with me." Once more, don't engage in further discussion.
By doing it this way:
you will strictly speak the truth,
you will honor their time,
you will preserve YOUR time.
Best wishes. |

use this to your advantage. Tell them that you received a better offer, tell them what the offer was.
Many of them will counter and some will even offer to review the offer to find any problems for you in an attempt to dissuade you from signing.
They are used to it |

Remove the emotion from the situation. Don't be apologetic, and stick to the best deal. Don't tell the other agents anything until they ask. When/ If they do, tell them you found a better deal. They understand how things work and will appreciate you honesty even if they seem upset. Take care of yourself and don't stress about it. |

Say you are not interested. I prefer to have a financial representative that can do everything for me such as life insurance, plan a roadmap to meet my financial goals, help me find a way to pay off my debt quicker, and help me invest or move some assets around to my advantage.
But if you like life insurance agents, I hope you understand the difference between cash value vs term. You should ask the agent what kind of policy does he/she has? |

Simply thank them for the information. Let each of them know you are in the gathering and determining stage of what works for you. Let them know that if "you" have any questions, you will followup with them. I say this because they wiill want to set another date to followup. If they try to do this, again state, I appreciate you willingness to do this, however, what works for me is for "me" to contact you if I need further information and/or have questions. Be firm on this. |

Just say no. These are sales person, they get more "No" than "Yes" in their daily work. They are used to it. Be polite, be firm and be direct. Just tell them you have comparison shop and you decided to go with another insurance company. And if they ask you what it is that made you go else where, don't get into that conversation, just politely say you need to go now. and thanks for their time. |

I am an Insurance Agent and let me help you out a little. Sounds like you have been very upfront about shopping around. We hear that a lot, but most people use that as an excuse, and never do. That is why they are following up. This business is a tough one so they are very eager to write you a policy. When you do decide, just simply tell the others that you found a better rate, but that you really do appreciate their time. Be honest and upfront. We would much rather you just tell us no than to continue calling and having you in our "followup" file. If they are a reputable agent, they won't be mad or rude. If they are good thing you didn't go through them. Hope this helps |

Write them a letter. Make it generic and then change who it is to before you send it. Just tell them how you appreciate their time and efforts but you have not chosen their services. Tell them that you will consider them for the future. That is all. Then you won't have to talk to them and it is still professional. I have done that for the company I work for and it works nicely. |

Let them know up front that you are getting quotes and will get back to the one you choose when you have made a decision. Go get as many quotes as you care to; it is you who will be paying the money. And research so you know you are getting the type insurance you need for your situation in life. |
