How will this speeding ticket affect my insurance?
I got a speeding ticket today for going 80 in a 75. I'm 20 years old. I got one when i was 17 for going 37 in a 25. If age matters. This raised my insurance a little bit. Will this one raise it even more or will it be off my record? I live in SD and have State Farm insurance if it makes a diff.... thanks for the help.

P.S. If it makes a difference the one when I was 17 was on a MINNESOTA drivers license... now I have a SOUTH DAKOTA one, does this matter?

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU GET A TICKET

Here are some basic preliminary steps you should take which will get you started in the right direction.

1. What not to do. Please do not think "I'm guilty so there is nothing I can do" and just send in the payment by mail. This is the worst thing you can do. You will be pleading guilty and paying the highest possible fine allowed by law. You can cut your fine at least in half in most cases. It's easy to pay the lowest fine amount and save yourself hundreds of dollars.

2. The first thing you should always do, no matter what the facts are, is PLEAD NOT GUILTY and ask for a court date. You can do this by certified mail, going to the clerks window or going to the court room. You are innocent until proven guilty so make them prove your guilt. Don't do it for them. There are numerous ways they can screw up and your ticket will get dismissed. Also with a little preparation and help you can win at the hearing or before. This will give you time to calmly consider your alternatives and make a better informed decision. It is also the first step in saving money on a fine.

3. The next thing you should do is delay the proceedings by getting as many continuances as you can. Continuances are usually fairly easy to get for things like - you're out of town, can't get off work or you are sick etc. Each continuance increases the chance that the officer won't be there which will result in your ticket being dismissed. This happens 30% to 50% of the time depending on the court. I'd take those odds in Vegas any day.

4. Every time you go to court you should be prepared to fight your ticket in case it isn't continued and the officer is present. Simple but effective preparation is covered in my new book.

5. Get professional help by ordering "HOW TO FIGHT YOUR TRAFFIC TICKET AND WIN!!! 206 TIPS, TRICKS AND TECHNIQUES".
HOW TO FIGHT YOUR TRAFFIC TICKET & WIN!!!
This is the best book on the market for fighting traffic tickets.
If you are between the ages of 16 and death, and you drive a car, truck, Harley Davidson Motorcycle, a limo, a taxi, a moped or anything that can go faster than the speed limit, you will want the information revealed in this book.It doesn't matter if you don't have a ticket now because there are very good tips on how to prevent getting traffic tickets in the future and on how to talk your way out of your next traffic ticket and much more.
With thousands of pages of traffic laws it's inevitable that even safe drivers will eventually get stopped. In fact every time you or I drive we will technically break at least one traffic law. Today traffic tickets are expensive. The average ticket is about $150.00 with penalties and costs. But the real consequences are the insurance rate increases or cancellations, loss of points and possible loss of your license which makes it difficult to work and support yourself or your family.
That's why it's important to fight your first ticket and not wait until your third ticket when it may be too late. Remember three tickets and you're out.175 million tickets are written each year. With the help of this book you could be one of the people that were stopped and not given a ticket because they "talked" their way out of it.This book contains important inside information you can use to fight any traffic ticket in any state.if you really want to win then this easy to use, straight forward information I'm offering you is necessary and crucial.Newspaper article:

Get a Ticket? Book Helps Get You Out of It

Another good tip:
Don't smart off to traffic cops

by Michael Con Lon, Reuters

CHICAGO -Mel Leiding got a lot of traffic tickets. So many, in fact, that he decided to write a book about how not to to get tickets.
A lawyer who practices in the Anaheim, Calif., area, Leiding has produced a crisply written 53-page guide that might be a good investment for business travelers, both those who spend hours behind the wheel every week and those trying to find their way around a strange town in a rental car.
While the book covers everything from the roadside to the courtroom, Leiding's top advice may involve how to behave in the initial encounter with the officer who makes the stop.
"A couple of friends who are cops like the book, well most of it," he said. "I tell people it's important to have the right attitude, to cooperate. They said that's the No. 1 problem they have with people.
"Sometimes they stop people just to tell them to slow down or to watch a corner. The first thing they do, especially young kids, is smart off, and that's what does it," he added.
Some of his other tips: Don't answer questions like "Do you know why I stopped you?" or "Do you know how fast you were going?" that trigger an admission of guilt. An answer like "I'm not sure" leaves open more options.
Do ask for a warning instead of a ticket, and don't

It depends on your state. In CA your rates will skyrocket with a ticket especially at your age. But in some state the insurance companies do not even run your DMV record. You should call your agent and ask them.

If a ticket will count, then go to traffic school to keep it off your DMV record. And, other poster is right. Fight the ticket. You have a 50/50 chance the cop will not show up and it would be hard to prove you were only 5 miles over the limit. Did he show you his radar gun?

How did he know you were over the limit?
Fight the ticket.

Mike gave some great tips. Use them.

~~It will increase, that's for sure. Especially being under 25.

In California with State Farm, if you attend traffic school you do not have it count against you on your driving record or with State Farm.
See if you have the same option in SD.~~

Most insurance companies don't do anything unless you get 3 moving violation within a year. If you've only had the two, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. The one you got when you were 17 shouldn't show up at all.

well, i dont live in your state so it might be different, but i doubt it. youre older now too, and that helps. i got a ticket when i was 18, and my state farm insurance never even found out. i went in a couple days later to the courthouse and just payed in cash to get it back. didnt like it, but i just got it back asap. now, if you fight it in court and all that, and piss of the people, then theyll probably care a little more. i did it the easy way, and they never even told my insurance company. hey, what they dont know wont hurt them or my paychecks.

Look in the Yellow Pages and find a traffic ticket lawyer. He'll plead it down to a non-moving violation. It won't be cheaper in court, but it won't affect your insurance.
