cobra is the continuation of the plan you currently have. you can keep your cobra from 18-36 months.

when he leaves his current job, the employer is legally obligated to let you know of your rights to cobra (basically, that you can have it). keep in mind cobra is usually 102% of what your employer pays for you NOT what YOU pay. cobra is known to be VERY expensive. but, if you are pregnant, the alternative could be even worse. also, you can pick and choose who enrolls into cobra.. so, just you, just him, etc.

if you currently are on an HMO, and move to texas, you would have to convert it to a ppo most likely because most insurances do not allow you to have an hmo outside of your home state due to the way the hmo works.

if you are thinking about applying for independent coverage instead of cobra, remember that pregnancy is considered pre existing and you will not be accepted. if you decide to sign up with his new employer (if applicable) you cannot be denied for pregnancy. (only with independent insurance)

also, regarding group size (as others have mentioned)..

if the employer is 20+ employees, they are legally obligated to offer federal COBRA.

in CA (for example) if the employer is less than 20 employees, you can do CalCOBRA (which is for 36 months but like 112% +/- of the employers actual cost).. if your husbands current company is small, you might call the insurance company to see if they offer something like i just mentioned like CalCOBRA

One thing that you need to be made aware - no insurance company will write an individual health policy on anyone pregnant or any family member of anyone pregnant. You will not be able to get insurance other than COBRA.

COBRA may or may not be offered to you. COBRA only has to be offered if the plan you are currently on has more than 20 employees covered by it. If it has less it probably won't be offered.

COBRA will generally last for 18 months. You have at least 60 days to sign up if offered and you must pay the premium from the day you were terminated from the group plan. The premium will be 102% of what both you and your employer paid while on the plan.

Here is the government website for more information: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/health-plans/cobra.htm

I've never had to use it, but I think that if you leave a job where you have insurance, then the company is required to send you the forms, whether your new job offers insurance or not.

If he's not sure, your husband should check with the human resources department where he currently works. Keep in mind that you can only use COBRA for a limited period of time (I want to say 6 months), so if he finishes this temp. job, and can't find another job for another 4-5 months after that, you'll be without insurance.

Look into getting health insurance independently through a regular insurance company like Blue Cross Blue Shield, or Cinergy Health (they specialize in independent insurance for people who don't get it through work, or are self employed). Because this is a competitive market, it may be more affordable than you think. When I went to the BCBS website, I was able to get to a page where they will give you a quote for insurance, and offered medical plans that cover maternity.

I also pasted a government website that goes over all the frequently asked questions regarding COBRA.

On a side note, I know getting paid almost a years' salary in 2.5 months is tempting, but you really need to have a plan in place for when the job ends, and make sure you are banking at least half (if not more) of what he is making, in case he has trouble getting a job.

If his new job is offering insurance from day one, there is no need for COBRA and there is no pre-existing for pregnancy when you go from group insurance to group insurance. So see if this is the situation. If there is a waiting period (usually 3 months) for the new insurance to kick in, COBRA is the way to go.

Employers are only required to offer COBRA if the group has at least 20 employees. Your husband should be able to ask his HR dept if this is available to employees that terminate.

Once he terminates, it could take at least 30 days for the employer to notify the insurance he has terminated. Once he gets the election form from the COBRA company (usually a different administrator than the insurance company), he has 60 days to decide if he wants to elect the COBRA and send in the payment. He would only need to pay for the COBRA for the gap period until he become eligible for the new emloyer's insurance.

The premium for COBRA is expensive, because the employer does not pay any of the premium as they did when he was employed there-so be aware, you will be paying up to 102% of the premium.

Also, a previous poster recommended getting individual coverage-but there is no individual policy available to you that will cover you if you are already pregnant.

When you leave a job, for whatever reason, and had group insurance, or lose lose your health insurance for some reason, they are required by law to offer you COBRA coverage for 18 months.

COBRA is the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconcilliation Act, which Congress passed in 1986. This gives empolyees the right to continue their group coverage for up to 18 months after their group policy was terminated.

You will have to pay the premiums for it, which will be considerably more than you were paying, if your employer paid all or part of your group insurance premiums.

If you will Google COBRA, you will find all the information you need.

Not all employers are required to offer it.

COBRA is a law that requires most larger employers to give you an opportunity to keep your insurance, exactly as it is, but YOU have to pay the full premium, plus a 2% administration charge. You can keep it up to 18 months.
