What are my options? COBRA, but that could cost a ton more to keep! I can't believe we are having a baby with no insurance! We've always had great jobs and insurance coverage, and now we get this drop in the bucket! Unfortunately I can't get insurance through my employer, so this makes it even harder. Even a new job wouldn't kick in insurance for 90 days most likely. I make too much to apply for medicaid. Anyone have any ideas? |

If you want insurance and aren't eligible for Medicaid, then you have no choice but to keep the COBRA. Unless you or your husband are able to get a new job with group coverage right away.
Absolutely no private health insurance company would take you right now.
When a woman is already pregnant, her only options for health insurance are: employer group coverage, Medicaid, or to pay the prenatal/delivery expenses out of pocket.
Do the math...COBRA would almost certainly be less expensive than paying for the delivery/hospital stay out of your pocket. (Especially if you or the baby have any complications.)
Another thing to keep in mind...if you want the baby to have insurance when he/she is born, then you need to keep the COBRA coverage.
You can't purchase a new private policy for a newborn until he/she is at least 8-10 weeks old (at least!). No private/individual policy will touch a newborn until they "pass" their first medical exams, and are reasonably assured of not having any serious medical conditions. The only types of health insurance that newborns are eligible for right at birth is to either be added to existing family coverage or to go on Medicaid.
So...if I were in your shoes, it would be COBRA without a doubt. Its the only way that you are guaranteed that both you *and* the baby will have health insurance. (Again, unless your husband gets a new job quickly that comes with health insurance benefits.)
ETA: Don't forget to turn in the paperwork to add the baby to the COBRA within 30 days of the birth, of course. |

Cobra's expensive but still less expensive than private insurance (if you could even get insurance with a pre-existing condition) and way less expensive than having to pay the hospital bills. Since you know you will need the coverage, bite the bullet and go for Cobra - it's a priority. |

Cobra, or welfare health insurance. THAT'S IT. You're uninsurable, now that you're pregnant.
So, you can either sell stuff and find the money for cobra, or pay for the birth yourself. |

There are some company's who's insurance go into effect within 30 days. However, there maybe a pre-existing condition clause. |

sure, I was once tlaking to this person on yahoo answers actually .
who had a baby with no insurance,
they went and had the baby, THey got a bill for 8,000 dollars.
THey went back and told them that there was "no way" they were going to be able to pay it. THey wound up settling for like $1400 and they had to pay it in cash and the account was closed.
I'm going to the doctor and i don't have insurnace and I'm planning on asking the deoctor for the best possible rate for cash he can give me. i'm hopung for as low as $75 |

You never make to much to apply for Mediciad. You need to apply for Medicaid and if you're denied your application will be sent to a program called All Kids (or something similar) which is low cost health insurance. If you're denied by them, contact Blue Cross/Blue Shield or other insurance providers in your area and see if they offer individual insurance programs like Individual Blue. If all else fails, keep the COBRA until you can find something else. |
